When you mentor someone, it is tempting to show them only the polished version of you.
The one who knows the answer.
The one who has it together.
But the most useful thing you can hand a person is not your success.
It is your failure, told honestly.
When someone is struggling, they are not just fighting the problem.
They are quietly wondering if they are the only one who finds this hard.
They look at you and assume you never stumbled the way they are stumbling now.
So tell them the truth.
Tell them about the time you shipped the bug that took down production.
Tell them about the project you quit because you were in over your head.
Tell them about the year you felt like a fraud and almost gave up.
Not to make it about you.
To make it safe to be human in front of you.
Because the moment they hear that you struggled too and came out the other side, something shifts.
Their struggle stops feeling like proof they do not belong.
It starts feeling like a normal part of getting better.
That is a gift only you can give, and only if you are willing to be a little exposed.
A mentor who only shows the highlight reel is inspiring for about a minute.
A mentor who shows the whole messy road is someone people actually trust.
So resist the urge to look flawless.
Your polish does not help them.
Your honesty does.
Share the wrong turns you took and what they taught you.
Share the fear you felt and how you moved anyway.
Let them see that the person they admire was once exactly where they are.
Because they will believe they can get where you are only if they believe you started where they did.
You did.
So tell them.
