Introduction To Tall Fescue Seed Production
Tall fescue is a valuable crop for seed production, but its quality can be compromised by the presence of annual bluegrass, a common weed that is difficult to remove from grass seed crops. Despite careful establishment, herbicide use, and hand roguing, annual bluegrass can remain in the crop, leading to contamination and increased seed-cleaning costs. Researchers have been exploring ways to reduce this contamination, and a recent study in Oregon has found that harvesting tall fescue above annual bluegrass seed heads could be an effective strategy.
Experimental Methodology And Design
The study compared different cutting heights, machinery settings, and seed moisture levels to determine their impact on annual bluegrass contamination and tall fescue seed yield. The researchers tested two cutting heights: 5 centimeters (2 inches) and 28 centimeters (11 inches), using a conventional swather and a combine for the initial cut. They also evaluated tall fescue seed moisture levels ranging from 18% to 45%. The trials were conducted in 2024 and 2025, and the results showed that higher cutting reduced annual bluegrass contamination without consistently reducing tall fescue seed yield.
Key Findings And Implications
The study found that cutting at 28 centimeters (11 inches) rather than 5 centimeters (2 inches) reduced annual bluegrass collected with the crop. This suggests that higher cutting could complement existing weed management strategies and reduce the burden on seed cleaning. However, the effectiveness of this approach is likely to depend on crop lodging and the height of annual bluegrass plants, which can reach 40.6 centimeters (16 inches). The researchers also found that lower-moisture harvest showed potential, with tall fescue yield not reduced when swathing occurred at 27% rather than 43% seed moisture in 2024.
Future Outlook And Refining Cutting Height
While the results of the study are promising, further work is needed to refine cutting height, reel speed, harvest timing, and direct-combining practices. The researchers found that machinery settings will be critical, and that using the swather at 28 centimeters (11 inches) reduced yield as seed moisture declined, possibly because higher reel speed increased seed shattering. As the seed production industry continues to evolve, it is likely that new strategies and technologies will be developed to reduce annual bluegrass contamination and improve the quality of tall fescue seed.
Conclusion And Real-World Applications
The study's findings have important implications for the seed production industry, as they suggest that higher cutting could be a simple and effective way to reduce annual bluegrass contamination. By harvesting tall fescue above annual bluegrass seed heads, farmers may be able to reduce the amount of weed seed in their crops, leading to higher-quality seed and reduced seed-cleaning costs. As researchers continue to refine this approach, it is likely that we will see widespread adoption of higher cutting in the seed production industry, leading to improved crop quality and reduced economic losses due to contamination.
