Google has officially renamed NotebookLM as Gemini Notebook, turning a familiar AI research tool into a more visibly connected part of the Gemini product family. The change is more than a logo update. Google is positioning notebooks as shared, context-rich workspaces that can synchronize between Gemini and NotebookLM, giving users a way to keep conversations, files, and research materials together across the two experiences.
According to Google's Workspace Updates announcement, the renamed product and logo begin rolling out across interfaces in the weeks following the July 16, 2026 post. Google says existing notebooks and links will be preserved through automatic redirects, so current users should not need to recreate their work simply because of the new name.
The practical significance is the tighter connection between conversational AI and source-grounded research. Rather than treating a chat as a temporary exchange and a notebook as a separate destination, users can organize relevant chats and materials into dedicated notebooks and continue working with that context in Gemini.
What Google is changing with Gemini Notebook
The rebrand builds on Google's April 2026 announcement of Notebooks in Gemini. That feature introduced notebooks within the Gemini app, allowing people to organize chats and files in a dedicated workspace that synchronizes with NotebookLM. Gemini Notebook is the broader name now being applied to that connected experience.
Google describes notebooks as places to bring together sources including Google Docs, PDFs, web URLs, YouTube content, and audio. Those materials can inform Gemini responses inside the notebook, while NotebookLM capabilities such as video overviews and infographics remain part of the connected workflow where available.
| Area | NotebookLM | Gemini Notebook |
|---|---|---|
| Product name | NotebookLM | Gemini Notebook |
| Relationship to Gemini | Research and notebook product | Part of a synchronized notebook experience across Gemini and NotebookLM |
| Existing notebooks and links | Existing user content and links | Preserved through automatic redirects during the rebrand |
| Rollout | Existing access | Updated branding rolling out across interfaces, with initial web access for Google AI Ultra, Pro, and Plus subscribers |
The naming shift also makes Google's product direction clearer. Gemini is becoming the umbrella for work that moves between AI conversations, research sources, Search integration, and Workspace-related tools. For people who already use NotebookLM, the immediate change is branding. The larger change is that the notebook is increasingly the persistent unit of work across Google's AI surfaces.
Google says the scope covers Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and people using personal Google accounts who have access to NotebookLM. The initial web rollout is for Google AI Ultra, Pro, and Plus subscribers, with mobile expansion planned in the following weeks. The announcement does not provide a single date for every interface, so availability will depend on the rollout stage and account access.
Why synchronized notebooks matter for everyday work
A notebook can act as a bounded working context for a project, client, campaign, or internal question. That matters because AI output is often more useful when the relevant reference material is already organized in one place. Gemini Notebook's value is therefore not simply storing notes. It is the ability to work from a selected body of documents and conversations without repeatedly rebuilding context.
For teams, the supported workflow possibilities include:
- Moving a useful Gemini conversation into a notebook for continued work.
- Attaching project materials and relevant sources to keep follow-up prompts grounded in the same context.
- Using the same notebook across Gemini and NotebookLM rather than treating research and chat as disconnected activities.
- Working with source types such as documents, PDFs, URLs, YouTube content, and audio.
- Accessing NotebookLM features such as video overviews and infographics where those features are available.
This can be especially useful for recurring knowledge work. A marketing team could assemble source material for a campaign, a manager could collect project documents and discussion threads, or a consultant could keep client-approved references alongside ongoing analysis. These are examples of how the documented notebook structure can be applied, not separate Google product promises.
The main limitation is that the experience is being rolled out in stages. Businesses should avoid assuming that every employee, device, or account type will receive the same capabilities immediately. They should also distinguish between the rename itself, which preserves existing notebooks and links, and the broader availability of notebooks in Gemini across web and mobile.
For organizations already working in Google's ecosystem, the change is a reason to review how research, reference documents, and AI conversations are currently scattered. A well-organized notebook structure can make those materials easier to reuse, but it still requires clear source selection and a repeatable process for deciding what belongs in each workspace.
Gemini Notebook can help teams turn scattered reference material into more repeatable AI-assisted work, but the gains depend on how well the tool fits existing processes.
