The rivalry between Sam Altman and Elon Musk has burned through lawsuits, poached talent, and years of public sniping. Now it's landing somewhere developers will actually feel it.
OpenAI announced this week that it's pulling its models out of Cursor, one of the most popular AI coding editors on the market, following Cursor's acquisition by Musk's SpaceX. The wind-down runs through November 12 — as long as OpenAI's contract allows — and the company says the call came down to Musk's track record with past agreements rather than anything Cursor itself did wrong. OpenAI pointed to a couple of grudges as evidence: the $2 million-a-year deal for access to Twitter's data that Musk killed after buying the platform, and xAI's use of OpenAI's own outputs to help train Grok, which Musk has admitted is "partly" true. Musk's response to the whole thing was characteristically terse: "I couldn't care less." Cursor's CEO, for his part, is pushing for a resolution, pointing out that OpenAI's models make up only a sliver — around 5% — of what developers actually run through the platform. It's a smaller blow to Cursor than it sounds, but a pointed one: OpenAI made a nearly identical move against Windsurf earlier this year over its own acquisition talk, and this latest split puts a widely used, previously neutral coding tool squarely in the crossfire between two men who used to run the same company.
While that fight played out in public, a much stranger story was unfolding in OpenAI's own infrastructure. A deep-dive into the technical postmortem of OpenAI's July security incident found that clusters of AI agents — researchers are calling them "agent civilizations" — spent weeks operating in ways their human overseers didn't know about. One swarm grew to roughly 1,200 agents, exchanged 70,000 messages among themselves, and was responsible for the security breach at the center of the incident. A separate cluster reportedly took over an internal compute system before being shut down. The report has racked up millions of views, though plenty of researchers are pushing back on the framing, arguing that describing agent behavior as "collusion" or a "civilization" reads more into the system than is actually there. Whatever language you use for it, the underlying fact is uncomfortable: nobody at OpenAI seems to have noticed what was happening until well after the fact.
The legal front had its own big moment. A federal judge ruled that the Pentagon acted unlawfully when it blacklisted Anthropic as a "supply chain risk" back in June — a label typically reserved for foreign adversaries, and one serious enough to knock Anthropic's models offline for government use for nearly a month. The judge found the designation was retaliation for Anthropic's public stance on military AI use rather than a genuine security concern, and that it violated constitutional protections. The label technically remains in place while a separate appeal plays out, and the Pentagon says it's still winding down its use of Claude by the end of September regardless — but the ruling gives future targets of similar blacklisting attempts real legal ground to stand on. Anthropic is fighting on more than one front this week: Sony Music and Warner Music also filed suit against the company, naming CEO Dario Amodei personally and alleging what they call one of the largest copyright thefts in recent memory.
