When I evaluate a SaaS tool, a framework, or a library, I run it through a mental checklist: does the evidence support the claim, or is the claim running ahead of the evidence? The same problem exists in consumer goods — and working through a credibility audit of sportswear brands recently made me realise the framework translates almost perfectly.
Brand expertise claims are a version of the same thing developers deal with constantly: someone asserts authority, you have to decide whether that authority is earned or manufactured. Getting it wrong costs you — whether that's a bad architectural decision or an expensive pair of trainers that underperform against their spec sheet.
Here's what I took away from running six major sportswear brands through a structured credibility audit, and how the framework applies well beyond sportswear.
The Problem: Perceived Expertise vs Actual Expertise
Perceived expertise and actual expertise are not the same thing, and the gap between them is commercially significant. Brands that successfully construct perceived expertise — regardless of whether it's fully substantiated — can charge premium prices and retain customers long-term. That's a well-documented dynamic.
What's less discussed is how to tell the difference from the outside. When a brand says it has 'decades of biomechanical research' or 'proprietary technology developed with elite athletes', what does that actually mean? Is it a verifiable institutional claim, or is it marketing copy dressed up as substance?
This is the same question I ask when a vendor claims their tool is 'built for enterprise scale' or 'validated by security researchers'. The framing feels authoritative; the substance may or may not be there.
The Audit Framework
The five-point checklist I used — which maps cleanly to evaluating any tool or service:
1. Institutional backing — is the authority verifiable?
ASICS runs a physical Institute of Sport Science in Kobe, Japan. That's a verifiable institutional structure, not a narrative. When a brand (or vendor) can point to an institution, a lab, a published dataset or a named research programme, the claim moves from assertion to evidence.
2. Category restraint — does the expertise claim match the actual scope?
Mizuno focuses its technical claims on running, baseball, volleyball and golf. It does not attempt to project authority across every sport. That restraint is itself a credibility signal — overreach is a red flag. I notice the same pattern with developer tools: a library that claims to solve every problem in its domain is more suspicious than one with a clearly scoped purpose.
3. Consistency of messaging — does the story hold across touchpoints?
Under Armour's expertise narrative was coherent during its peak years, built around moisture management and fabric science. After divesting its connected fitness platforms and expanding into adjacent markets without a clear technical anchor, the story became harder to follow. Inconsistency suggests the messaging is being rewritten around commercial priorities rather than genuine positioning.
4. Quality of technical communication — does the brand explain or just assert?
There's a meaningful difference between a brand that explains why a specific cushioning geometry reduces pronation and one that says 'advanced cushioning technology for superior performance'. The former invites scrutiny and can survive it. The latter depends on the reader not asking follow-up questions. When evaluating a tool, I look at documentation quality for the same reason — shallow docs are often a proxy for shallow thinking.
5. Product-claim alignment — does the range substantiate the positioning?
Champion has genuine manufacturing heritage — its reverse weave construction solved a real problem in 1919 — but its current product range is weighted towards casualwear. The historical claim is valid; the current expertise claim is not well-supported by what the brand actually makes and sells. Heritage without active maintenance is a passive asset, not a live credential.
Worked Example: Why ASICS Ranks First and Fila Ranks Last
Running all six brands through this checklist produces a clear spread.
ASICS scores well on all five points. The Kobe institute is real and publicly documented. Technical communication on pronation control, foot strike patterns and cushioning mechanics is detailed and consistent. The expertise claim is largely confined to running and court sports, where the product range can substantiate it. The gap between claim and evidence is narrower here than for any other brand assessed.
Fila scores poorly on most. Its original Italian textile heritage and historical tennis associations — Björn Borg wore Fila kit — are genuine, but its current output is lifestyle-driven and its marketing makes no serious attempt to construct technical authority. The expertise that exists is historical and largely decorative in the context of contemporary purchasing decisions.
The brands in the middle — Under Armour, PUMA, Mizuno and Champion — are more instructive than the outliers, because they each have some credible foundation that is unevenly realised. PUMA's NITRO cushioning range has attracted genuine third-party validation, but that technical investment is often submerged beneath lifestyle and athlete-association messaging. Mizuno's credibility within its target disciplines is disproportionately high relative to its mainstream visibility — a brand more trusted than it is known.
Honest Limitations
This framework has gaps I should be upfront about.
First, it's hard to audit what you can't access. Institutional claims are verifiable in principle, but the depth of research output behind them is often opaque. A brand can maintain a research institute without producing research that meaningfully influences its product decisions.
Second, category focus is a credibility signal but not a guarantee. A narrowly focused brand can still produce inferior products within its specialism. Restraint reduces the credibility risk of overreach, but it doesn't validate the underlying technical claim.
Third, this framework is better at identifying red flags than at confirming genuine expertise. It tells you when to be sceptical more reliably than it tells you when to be confident.
The same caveats apply when evaluating tools and services. A library with excellent documentation and a clearly scoped purpose can still have performance issues under load. The audit reduces risk; it doesn't eliminate it.
Applying This Beyond Sportswear
The five-point checklist — institutional backing, category restraint, messaging consistency, communication quality, product-claim alignment — works on any authority narrative. I've started running vendor claims through it more deliberately, and it surfaces useful questions faster than a general scepticism does.
The underlying principle is straightforward: credible authority explains its reasoning rather than asserting its conclusions. Whether that's a sportswear brand describing the biomechanics behind its shoe construction, or a database vendor explaining the architecture behind its consistency guarantees, the pattern holds.
