A sensory garden is deliberately planted to engage touch, smell, and sound, not just sight — genuinely valuable for children, for anyone with visual impairment, or simply for a garden that rewards more than a quick glance in passing.

Plants for Touch
Plant Sensory Quality
Lamb's ear Genuinely soft, velvety leaves, a favorite for children to touch
Ornamental grasses Varied textures, from soft and feathery to firm and structured
Succulents Smooth, plump leaves distinct from typical foliage texture
Plants for Smell
Herbs are the natural backbone of a scent-focused planting — mint, basil, and lavender all release fragrance readily when brushed against, not just when actively sniffed. Explore our herb seed collection for fragrant, easy-to-grow varieties well-suited to a sensory bed.
Pro tip: Position fragrant plants directly along a path edge, not tucked into the back of a bed. The goal is for a passerby to brush against the foliage naturally while walking through, releasing scent without needing to deliberately stop and seek it out.
Plants for Sound
Ornamental grasses that rustle in wind, and seed pods that rattle once dried, add a genuinely underused sensory dimension most garden planning skips entirely. Tall grasses positioned where breeze naturally moves through them turn wind into an active part of the garden experience rather than something merely felt.
Designing for All the Senses Together
Choose 2-3 touch plants along accessible edges where hands naturally reach
Layer in fragrant herbs and flowers at path height, not just in raised, harderto-reach beds
Add at least one sound element, like ornamental grass, positioned to catch prevailing wind
Watch out: Not every plant marketed as "soft" or "touchable" is actually safe for repeated handling — some attractive foliage causes mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Confirm a plant is genuinely safe for frequent touching, especially in a garden intended for children, before making it a central feature.
