How to Create Better Developer Walkthrough Videos

Writing code is only one part of software development. A lot of developer time is also spent explaining that code.

You might need to explain a pull request, demonstrate a bug, walk through a new feature, show how an API works, or explain why a particular implementation was chosen.

Screenshots and long messages can work, but they often leave out important context.

A short developer walkthrough video can be a much faster way to communicate technical information.

With a screen recording tool like RookieClip, you can record your screen and camera, add zooms, customize your recording, generate subtitles, and share the finished video with your team.

Here's how to create better developer walkthrough videos.

Why Developers Should Use Video

Developers already spend a significant amount of time communicating.

Code reviews, Slack messages, GitHub issues, documentation, standups, and meetings all require you to explain what you're building.

Sometimes a few lines of text are enough.

Sometimes they aren't.

For example, imagine reporting a UI bug with this message:

"The dropdown isn't working correctly on mobile."

You could attach a screenshot, but the screenshot doesn't show how to reproduce the issue.

A short screen recording can show the entire process:

1. Open the application
2. Resize the browser
3. Open the dropdown
4. Reproduce the bug
5. Show the unexpected behavior
6. Explain what you expected to happen

The person receiving the video can understand the problem without needing a long explanation.

1. Record Your Screen and Camera

Start by recording your screen while working on the project.

You can use a browser-based screen recorder such as RookieClip to record your screen and camera simultaneously.

Recording your camera can make technical walkthroughs feel more personal, especially when you're explaining something to a client, teammate, or non-technical stakeholder.

You can use this format for:

• Coding tutorials
• Product demos
• Technical presentations
• Code reviews
• Bug reports
• Team updates
• Developer onboarding
• Feature demonstrations

For purely technical videos, screen-only recording may be enough. For presentations and explanations, adding your camera can make the walkthrough more engaging.

2. Show the Actual Development Process

Don't just show the final result.

Show enough of the process for the viewer to understand what changed.

For example, when explaining a new feature, you could show:

• The original behavior
• The problem you were solving
• The relevant code
• The implementation
• The result
• The final behavior

This is particularly useful for GitHub walkthroughs and code reviews.

Instead of saying:

"I added caching to improve the API performance."

You can open your repository, show the relevant files, explain the changes, and then demonstrate the improved behavior.

The viewer gets the complete context in a few minutes.

3. Use Zooms to Highlight Code

Code can be difficult to follow when the entire screen is visible.

When you're explaining a specific function, API call, configuration file, or UI element, zoom into that area.

RookieClip lets you add zooms directly to your timeline.

You can position a zoom over the part of the screen you want to highlight and adjust its duration.

You can also chain multiple zooms together.

For example, you could:

• Zoom into a function
• Move to another function
• Move to an API request
• Move to the resulting UI

The video stays zoomed in while moving between the different areas instead of zooming out after every transition.

This makes long code walkthroughs much easier to follow.

4. Create Smooth Camera Transitions

If you're recording your camera, you don't have to keep the same layout throughout the entire video.

You can split your camera recording into multiple clips and change the layout of each clip.

For example:

• Camera on the right
• Camera in the corner
• Camera full screen
• Camera on the left

RookieClip automatically creates smooth transitions between different camera layouts.

This can be useful when switching between explaining something directly to the viewer and focusing entirely on your screen.

5. Use Subtitles for Technical Videos

Subtitles aren't just useful for accessibility.

They also make technical videos easier to follow when viewers are watching without sound.

You can generate subtitles from your recording and edit individual words when necessary.

RookieClip also supports filler word removal.

Words such as "um", "uh", and other filler words can be automatically removed from the transcript.

When filler words are removed, the corresponding parts of the video are removed as well.

This creates a simple form of text-based video editing.

Instead of manually searching through the timeline for every unnecessary pause or filler word, you can edit the transcript and let the video follow those changes.

You can also choose different subtitle styles, including:

• White subtitles
• Yellow subtitles
• Word-highlight subtitles

6. Style Your Screen Recordings

A raw screen recording can work, but small visual improvements can make the final video feel much more polished.

You can customize individual videos and images by changing:

• Border thickness
• Border color
• Shadow
• Hue
• Saturation
• Brightness
• Contrast

You can also turn an element into a circle.

This can be particularly useful for camera recordings, profile images, and thumbnails.

For transparent images, you can match the border to the shape of the image instead of applying a simple rectangular border.

7. Add Motion With 3D Tilt Effects

Static screen recordings can sometimes feel flat.

Adding small motion effects can make important visuals more engaging.

RookieClip includes 3D tilt effects that can be applied to videos and images.

You can choose a tilt style, add it to the timeline, and adjust its duration by resizing the effect on the timeline.

The result is a small animation that can help emphasize a particular part of your video without requiring complicated editing software.

8. Use Video for Code Reviews

Code reviews are one of the best use cases for developer walkthrough videos.

A pull request might contain dozens of changed files.

A reviewer can read the diff, but sometimes the reasoning behind the implementation isn't obvious from the code.

A short video can explain:

• What the feature does
• Which files were changed
• Why the implementation was chosen
• What edge cases were considered
• How the feature works
• What the reviewer should pay attention to

You can record the GitHub pull request, open your editor, demonstrate the feature, and explain the important parts.

The reviewer can then watch the walkthrough before or while reviewing the code.

This doesn't replace code review.

It provides context for it.

9. Use Video for Bug Reports

Bug reports are another situation where video can save a lot of time.

Instead of writing:

"The page breaks when the user submits the form."

Record yourself reproducing the issue.

Show:

1. The initial state
2. The actions you take
3. The error
4. The browser console
5. The network request, if relevant
6. The expected behavior

This is especially useful when working with browser developer tools.

A Chrome DevTools walkthrough can show the Console, Network tab, Elements panel, request payloads, API responses, and other debugging information.

The developer receiving the report doesn't have to reproduce the issue from a vague description.

They can see exactly what happened.

10. Use Video for Technical Documentation

Documentation doesn't always have to be written.

For complicated workflows, a short video can complement your existing documentation.

For example, onboarding documentation might explain how to run a service locally.

A video can demonstrate:

• Which repository to clone
• Which environment variables are required
• Which command to run
• Which services need to be started
• What the expected output looks like

This can be particularly useful for onboarding new developers.

Instead of asking someone to explain the same setup process repeatedly, record it once and include the video alongside the written documentation.

11. Keep Developer Videos Short

You don't need to create a 30-minute tutorial for every change.

In many cases, 2–5 minutes is enough.

Before recording, decide what you want the viewer to understand.

A simple structure works well:

Context

What are you showing and why?

Problem

What problem are you solving?

Implementation

What did you change?

Result

What does the final result look like?

Next Steps

Is there anything the viewer needs to review or do?

This keeps the walkthrough focused and prevents unnecessary explanation.

12. Share the Video Instead of Scheduling Another Meeting

One of the biggest advantages of developer screen recordings is asynchronous communication.

Not every question needs a meeting.

Instead of scheduling a call to explain a feature, you can record a short walkthrough and send the link.

Instead of writing a long Slack message, you can demonstrate the issue.

Instead of repeatedly explaining the same development workflow, you can record it once.

This can make distributed development teams significantly easier to work with.

What Developers Can Record

There are countless use cases for developer screen recordings.

Here are some of the most common:

Code Walkthroughs

Explain how a piece of code works or why it was implemented a certain way.

GitHub Pull Requests

Walk reviewers through a large or complicated pull request.

Bug Reports

Record exactly how to reproduce a problem.

API Demonstrations

Show requests, responses, authentication, and application behavior.

Debugging Sessions

Show browser DevTools, logs, errors, and debugging steps.

Feature Demos

Demonstrate a newly completed feature to your team or stakeholders.

Technical Tutorials

Create coding tutorials and development guides.

Developer Onboarding

Explain project setup, architecture, tooling, and workflows.

Team Updates

Show what you've been working on instead of writing a long status update.

Create Better Developer Walkthrough Videos

The goal of a developer walkthrough isn't to create a highly produced video.

It's to communicate technical information clearly.

Start with the problem, show the relevant code or application behavior, explain the important decisions, and finish by demonstrating the result.

Use zooms when you need to focus attention, subtitles when they improve accessibility, and camera transitions when they make the presentation more engaging.

With RookieClip, you can record your screen and camera, edit the recording, add zooms and effects, generate subtitles, remove filler words, and share the finished video with a link.

For developers, sometimes a 3-minute screen recording is more useful than 30 minutes of messages.
