Beginners fear the silence.
So they fill it.
Every gap gets a note,
every pause gets a flourish,
every second of nothing gets afraid
and reaches for something.
The result is loud
and says almost nothing.
The rest is not the absence of music.
It is part of the music
you were too nervous to trust.
Listen to anyone great.
Half of what moves you
is what they decided not to play.
The held breath before the chorus.
The beat that lands late on purpose.
The space where the last note is still ringing
and they let it.
Silence is not empty.
It is the frame
that makes the next note mean something.
Play everything
and nothing has weight.
The ear needs somewhere to rest
or it stops hearing you at all.
This is not only about music.
It is every line you write.
Every feature you add.
Every word you say when less would carry further.
The clutter is the fear.
The confidence is the pause.
A player who trusts the song
can leave a hole in it
and know the hole is holding.
You do not prove you can play
by never stopping.
You prove it
by choosing exactly where to.
So practice the rest
like it is the hardest note.
Because it is.
Anyone can add.
Restraint is the rare hand.
Leave the space.
Let the last thing land
before you reach for the next.
The music was never only the notes.
It was always the shape
you cut around them.
