A rock identifier does more than name rocks; it introduces you to the scientific classification system that geologists use.
All rocks fall into three main categories: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. A quality rock identifier like Wonder Rock identifies which category your stone belongs to and explains the characteristics that define that category.
Igneous rocks form from cooled magma or lava. Your rock identifier distinguishes between intrusive types that cooled slowly underground and extrusive types that cooled rapidly at the surface. Granite and basalt are common examples that Wonder Rock identifies reliably.
Sedimentary rocks form from accumulated particles or precipitated minerals. A rock identifier identifies these by their layered textures and grain characteristics. Limestone, sandstone, and shale are sedimentary rocks that your rock identifier can distinguish based on composition and grain size.
Metamorphic rocks form when existing rocks change under heat and pressure. Your rock identifier identifies metamorphic rocks by their foliated textures and recrystallized minerals. Marble from limestone or slate from shale are metamorphic transformations your rock identifier can recognize.
Within each category, a rock identifier like Wonder Rock provides increasingly specific identification. The app moves from general type to specific variety, helping you understand the classification hierarchy and where each specimen fits.
Learning the classification system through your rock identifier builds transferable geological knowledge. The more identifications you make, the better you understand how rock types relate to each other and what each tells us about Earth history.
Your rock identifier is your personal guide to the classification system that professional geologists use. Wonder Rock makes this scientific framework accessible to everyone.
