How to Check If Someone Is Spying on Your Windows PC (Complete Guide)

Your PC feels slower than usual.

The network light keeps flashing even when you're not doing anything.

You find programs you don't remember installing.

Your browser settings have changed on their own.

You might think:

"Is someone spying on my computer?"

It's a terrifying thought.

Spyware, keyloggers, and monitoring tools can run silently in the background — capturing your keystrokes, recording your screen, and sending your data to someone else.

The good news?

Spyware can leave traces.

But it's important to remember that many of these signs can also have innocent explanations. This guide helps you investigate suspicious activity and make a more informed assessment — not jump to conclusions.

Signs Someone Might Be Spying on Your PC

Before you dive into technical checks, look for these common signs:

If you notice any of these, follow the steps below — but keep in mind that each symptom could have a harmless cause.

7 Ways to Check for Spyware and Monitoring Tools

1. Check Task Manager for Hidden Processes

Spyware runs as a process — sometimes disguised with names that look legitimate.

How to check:

1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
2. Go to the Processes tab
3. Look for programs you don't recognize

Red flags:

• Processes with random names (e.g., asd123.exe, temp.exe)
• Processes running from C:\Users\[YourName]\AppData\Local\Temp\
• Processes with no digital signature
• Processes that look like Windows but are slightly misspelled:
  • svch0st.exe instead of svchost.exe
  • expl0rer.exe instead of explorer.exe
  • winlogon.exe in the wrong folder

What to do:

1. Right-click the suspicious process → Open file location
2. Check the file's digital signature
3. If you're unsure, search the process name online

Pro tip: Use Process Explorer from Microsoft Sysinternals — it shows more detail than Task Manager.

2. Check Network Activity for Suspicious Traffic

Spyware sends data out to the internet. If your network is active when you're not using it, something may be uploading.

How to check:

1. Open Task Manager → Performance tab
2. Click Resource Monitor (or Open Resource Monitor at the bottom)
3. Go to the Network tab
4. Look at Network Activity

What to look for:

• High network activity when your PC is idle
• Processes you don't recognize sending data
• Connections to unfamiliar or unexpected IP addresses or domains

How to check using Command Prompt:

1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
2. Run: netstat -ano | findstr "ESTABLISHED"
3. Look for suspicious IP addresses
4. Match the PID to a process in Task Manager

Pro tip: Use GlassWire or Wireshark for more detailed network monitoring.

3. Check Startup Programs

Spyware often adds itself to startup so it runs every time you boot.

How to check:

1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)
2. Go to the Startup tab
3. Look for unfamiliar entries
4. Check the Startup impact column

Common spyware startup locations to check manually:

• shell:startup (user startup folder)
• Task Scheduler → taskschd.msc
• Registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
• Registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

What to look for: Entries with random names, misspelled Windows names, or paths pointing to Temp folders.

Pro tip: Use Autoruns from Microsoft Sysinternals — it shows every startup location in one place.

4. Check Installed Programs for Monitoring Software

Spyware and monitoring tools are often installed as programs — and sometimes they're not hidden.

How to check:

1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps
2. Sort by Install date (newest first)
3. Look for anything suspicious

Common names to watch for:

What to do:

• If you didn't install it, research it
• If you believe an application is malicious, disconnect the PC from the network if necessary, document the suspicious details, and run a trusted security scan before removing it

5. Check Browser Extensions

Spyware can hide as browser extensions — tracking your browsing history, capturing passwords, and injecting ads.

How to check:

What to look for:

• Extensions you don't recognize
• Extensions with vague names (e.g., "Security Helper", "Privacy Guard")
• Extensions you didn't install recently

What to do:

• Remove any extension you didn't install
• Disable all extensions and re-enable only ones you trust

Pro tip: Use Malwarebytes Browser Guard for extra protection.

6. Run a Full Antivirus and Anti-Spyware Scan

Your built-in antivirus can detect most spyware — but you may need a second opinion.

How to run a full scan with Windows Security:

1. Open Windows Security (search "Windows Security" in Start)
2. Go to Virus & threat protection
3. Click Scan options
4. Select Full scan
5. Click Scan now

Alternative tools (free):

Pro tip: Run scans in Safe Mode for better detection.

7. Check for Hardware Keyloggers

Hardware keyloggers are physical devices plugged between your keyboard and your PC.

How to check:

• Physically inspect the back of your PC
• Check the USB port where your keyboard is plugged in
• Look for any small device between the keyboard cable and the PC
• Check the USB path for anything unusual

Important: Hardware keyloggers can be difficult to detect through software alone, so physically inspect the keyboard connection and USB path if you suspect one.

What If You Want to Monitor Your PC Automatically?

Manually checking Task Manager, network activity, startup programs, and installed apps is time-consuming.

You have to:

• Check Task Manager every time you feel suspicious
• Monitor network traffic
• Check startup locations regularly
• Review installed programs

That's exactly why I built SysPulse — a lightweight Windows security monitor that automatically monitors selected Windows activity and alerts you when monitored events or configured thresholds are detected.

SysPulse can:

• Detect new processes and show their full file paths
• Monitor CPU and RAM anomalies
• Detect USB connections in real-time
• Detect startup changes
• Send Telegram alerts for monitored events
• Use less than 30MB of RAM

You can set it up and let it monitor your PC in the background, so you don't have to check manually every time you feel suspicious.

Final Thought

If you're worried about someone spying on your PC, don't ignore that feeling.

Start with the simple checks:

1. Check Task Manager for hidden processes
2. Monitor network activity
3. Review startup programs and installed apps
4. Run a full security scan

If you want peace of mind without checking manually every day, a real-time monitoring tool like SysPulse can watch your system for you and alert you the moment something changes.

The key: Don't wait until something goes wrong. Know what's happening on your PC right now.
