> **Quick Answer:** Your car is stuck in park because of a failed brake shift interlock, a dead or weak battery, or a broken shift cable. First, make sure your foot is firmly on the brake pedal, then look for a small shift lock override slot near the shifter. Insert a key or small flathead screwdriver, push down, and try shifting again. If that fails, you likely need a tow.
## What Do I Do Right Now to Get My Car Out of Park?
Press the brake pedal firmly to the floor before you try anything else. Many drivers assume they're doing this but aren't applying enough pressure to trigger the brake shift interlock solenoid.
If that doesn't work, find the shift lock override. On most automatic transmission vehicles, it's a small rectangular slot covered by a plastic cap, located on the shifter console right next to or just in front of the gear selector. Pop the cap off with a coin or fingernail, insert your ignition key or a small flathead screwdriver about half an inch, push down, and shift while your foot stays on the brake. This manually bypasses the interlock. The cap location varies by make and model, so check your owner's manual if you can't find it quickly.
If you're on a slope, the parking pawl inside the transmission may be under load. Try pushing the car slightly forward or backward by hand (with help from a passenger) to take the pressure off, then shift. This is especially common if you parked on a hill without setting the wheels against the curb first.
## What Is Actually Causing My Car to Be Stuck in Park?
The three most common causes are a failed brake shift interlock solenoid, a low or dead battery, and a damaged shift cable. The solenoid is an electronic component that only allows the shifter to move when it detects brake pedal input. When it fails, the car thinks you never pressed the brake.
A weak battery is often the culprit people miss. The interlock solenoid needs adequate voltage to release. If your battery is at 11 volts or below, the solenoid may not actuate even with your foot on the brake. If your dash lights look dim or you hear a slow crank, that's your answer. A jump start may solve the whole problem instantly. See [Dead Battery No Jumper Cables: Your Options Right Now](/dead-battery-no-jumper-cables-options/) if you don't have cables on hand.
A broken shift cable is less common but more serious. The cable runs from your shifter to the transmission. If it snaps or pops off its anchor, the lever moves but nothing happens at the transmission. This one requires a tow.
## Is It Safe to Stay in My Car or Should I Get Out?
If you're stopped in a safe off-road location like a parking lot or driveway, stay in the car and work through the troubleshooting steps. If you're on the shoulder of a highway or any active travel lane, get out of the vehicle, move behind the guardrail or as far from traffic as possible, and call for help. Do not stand between your car and moving traffic while trying to troubleshoot.

[broken down situation on a highway at night](/broken-down-on-highway-at-night-safety-tips-what-to-do/) is a different calculation entirely. Your safety is not worth saving a tow bill.
## When Do I Need to Call a Tow Truck?
Call a tow if the shift lock override didn't work, if a jump start didn't fix it, and if you can physically move the shifter but the car doesn't change gears. That last scenario points to a broken shift cable or internal transmission damage, and driving it further will make the repair worse and more expensive.
Also call a tow if you're in a dangerous location and can't safely wait for roadside assistance to arrive. A local tow typically runs $75 to $150 for the first few miles, though rates vary by city and time of day. If you're dealing with a broader transmission issue, read [Transmission Failed on Highway: Tow or Drive to Shop?](/transmission-failed-on-highway-tow-or-drive-to-shop/) before you make that call.
Roadside assistance through AAA, your insurance carrier, or a paid service plan will usually cover the shift lock override attempt at no extra charge. If they can fix it on the spot, you avoid the tow fee entirely.

## Common Questions
**Q: Why won't my car shift out of park even with my foot on the brake?**
A: The brake shift interlock solenoid is the most common reason. It's an electronic lock that should release when you press the brake, but if the solenoid fails or your battery is too weak to power it, the shifter stays locked. Use the manual shift lock override slot on your console to bypass it.
**Q: Where is the shift lock override on my car?**
A: It's a small covered slot, usually rectangular, located on the shifter console right next to the gear selector. The plastic cover pops off with a coin or fingernail. Insert a key or small flathead screwdriver, push down, keep your foot on the brake, and shift. Check your owner's manual for the exact location on your specific model.
**Q: Can a dead battery cause a car to stay stuck in park?**
A: Yes. The brake shift interlock solenoid is electrically powered. If your battery voltage drops low enough, the solenoid won't release regardless of how hard you press the brake. Try a jump start first before assuming a more serious mechanical failure.
**Q: Can I drive my car if I got it out of park using the override?**
A: You can drive it to a shop, but don't ignore the root cause. The override is a workaround, not a fix. If the interlock solenoid failed, it will happen again. If the battery was the cause, get it tested. Drive straight to a mechanic, not across town and back.
**Q: How much does it cost to fix a brake shift interlock solenoid?**
A: Parts for a shift interlock solenoid typically run $20 to $60. Labor adds another $50 to $150 depending on how accessible the shifter assembly is in your vehicle. A broken shift cable costs more, usually $200 to $500 parts and labor combined.
