75% of imported honey in Europe is adulterated with Chinese rice syrup — and it passes all the tests
Honey is the most falsified food in the world, according to European Consumer Centre data from 2023. The most widespread fraud: honey adulterated with rice sugar syrup or corn fructose of Chinese origin (EIU 2.12), which in many laboratories passes standard authenticity tests because China's sophisticated falsification methods evolve faster than European controls.
The European Commission published in 2022 the results of its "Better Training for Safer Food" (BTSF) analysis on honey: 46% of the imported honey samples analysed did not meet authenticity standards. The most documented case: so-called "Chinese launderer honey" — honey produced in China arriving in Europe through intermediaries in Ukraine (5.57 — blocked), Vietnam (3.08), or Argentina (6.78), with labels indicating European or transit-country origin.
However, verified democratic-origin honey exists, is superior in quality, and is completely identifiable if you know what to look for. This article teaches you how to find it.
The problem: honey fraud has roots in the global supply chain
China (2.12) produces 25% of the world's honey by volume. Its hives are often located in areas with intensive pesticide use. Chloramphenicol — an antibiotic banned in the EU for food — has been found in imported Chinese honey samples in 2021 and 2023 controls.
The multi-layer fraud: Chinese honey is mixed with European honey in low proportions (20–30%) before being labelled as "blend of EU honeys." This blend is legal if indicated on the label — but the exact proportion does not need to be declared, and control laboratories do not always detect adulteration at those levels.
Argentina (6.78) and Uruguay (8.91) are the largest honey producers in South America. Argentina clears the threshold with 6.78, but Uruguay (8.91) is the most democratic South American supplier. Uruguayan honey has robust traceability certifications.
The problem with organic certifications: as with other products, "organic" certifications for Chinese honey are issued by Chinese bodies with variable rigour. The EFSA has documented systematic irregularities.
The democratic countries producing quality honey with traceability
Spain (8.13) — The EU's largest beekeeping producer, with over 3 million registered hives. Spanish honey holds DO (Designation of Origin) in several regions: Miel de Granada, Miel de La Alcarria (Spain's oldest, since 1993). Spanish monofloral honeys — rosemary, orange blossom, thyme, lavender — are world-class.
Germany (8.58) — German honey produced by the Deutsche Imkerbund (German Beekeeping Federation) has full traceability to the beekeeper. The "Echter Deutscher Honig" seal guarantees 100% German origin with hive-to-jar certification. Higher price, verified quality.
New Zealand (9.61) — Manuka honey (Leptospermum scoparium) is the world's most studied functional honey, with documented antibacterial activity (MGO, UMF index). The New Zealand government specifically regulates Manuka honey with mandatory authenticity tests. Premium price (€25–80 per 250 g), but fully democratic and verified chain.
Portugal (7.90) — Alentejo and Azores honey holds European PDO (Protected Designation of Origin). Heather and eucalyptus honeys from northern Portugal are internationally recognised. Portuguese beekeeping cooperatives have beekeeper-level traceability.
Austria (8.30) — Austrian beekeeping has one of Europe's most rigorous traceability systems. The Österreich Honig seal certifies 100% Austrian origin with beekeeper and region data.
How to identify honey with democratic origin at the point of sale
— "Honey from [specific country]": the best guarantee is a single declared origin. "Blend of EU honeys" is legal but opaque.
— Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) or PGI: European PDO honeys have the highest level of traceability. La Alcarria (Spain), Miel de Galicia (Spain), Miel des Cévennes (France).
— Beekeeper number or hive code: high-quality artisan honeys include the beekeeper's registration number, verifiable in the country's official register.
— Colour and texture: pure high-quality honey crystallises naturally. Honey adulterated with syrups tends to remain liquid or show artificial crystallisation.
— Authenticity certifications: German "Echter Deutscher Honig," Spanish "Pura Miel" from FIAB, or national beekeeping federation seals are more reliable than generic certifications.
The best options in 2026 with a democratic supply chain
Miel de La Alcarria PDO — Spain (8.13). Spain's oldest honey designation of origin. Produced in the Cuenca and Guadalajara highlands, with rosemary and thyme as predominant flora. Price: €8–15 per 500 g.
Echter Deutscher Honig — Germany (8.58). Any honey carrying this seal is 100% German with full beekeeper traceability. Available in health food stores and speciality shops. Price: €10–20 per 500 g.
Comvita Manuka UMF 10+ — New Zealand (9.61). The world's best-known Manuka brand. UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) certification with mandatory testing. Price: €25–45 per 250 g.
Wedderspoon Raw Manuka — New Zealand (9.61). Raw Manuka honey with KFactor certification. Price: €20–35 per 250 g.
Miel das Azores PDO — Portugal (7.90). Heather honey from the Azores with European PDO. Unique aromatic profile. Price: €10–18 per 500 g.

Honey is political too
When you buy honey at €3 in a supermarket labelled "blend of EU/non-EU honeys," a significant part of that honey very likely comes from China (2.12), adulterated with rice syrup, produced in hives with chloramphenicol, and having passed through at least two transit countries to erase its trail.
When you buy La Alcarria PDO honey (Spain, 8.13) or Echter Deutscher Honig (Germany, 8.58), you are buying honey from a beekeeper with a name and address, in a country where European food standards are rigorously enforced, and where bees forage in environments with lower pesticide pressure.
Democratic Market lists only honey with verified origin in countries with an EIU score above 6.0. Because even dessert can have a democratic origin.
