Your website is online. It looks good. The animations are smooth, the landing page is polished, and people can actually visit it.
So everything's working, right?
Not necessarily.
I've come across plenty of websites that look perfectly fine at first glance but fall apart the moment you actually try to use them. A button that doesn't take you where you expect. A link that leads straight to a 404. A form that looks functional but fails the moment someone tries to submit it.
Being online and actually working aren't the same thing. And for a business, that gap can be costing you customers you never even knew you lost.
A Beautiful Website Can Still Be a Broken One
Most conversations about websites focus on design. Does it look modern? Are the animations smooth? Is the landing page attractive?
Those things matter, but a website is more than its homepage. A customer doesn't care how good your homepage looks if clicking "Buy Now" sends them somewhere unexpected. They don't care about a slick animation if they can't complete a form or finish a purchase.
I've seen impressive, well-designed sites hiding broken links, unfinished pages, and buttons that quietly don't do what they promise. A website shouldn't just look good. It should work, and that means checking what actually happens after people start clicking around.
The Problem You Can't See Just by Looking
Sometimes the biggest issues aren't visible on the surface. This is where data becomes useful.
While working as an analyst on a website, I noticed something in the numbers: a significant gap between people adding products to their cart and people actually completing the purchase. That gap alone doesn't prove a technical fault, people abandon carts for plenty of reasons. But a drop that large was worth investigating.
Tools like Google Analytics can map out a checkout or purchase funnel and show exactly where visitors are dropping off, which gives you a real starting point instead of a guess.
So I went beyond the numbers and actually walked through the experience myself. That's when I found it.
The Purchase Button Was Being Covered
On the cart page, the button customers needed to continue their purchase was being overlapped by another element. The page technically loaded. The site was technically online. Some customers still managed to complete purchases anyway.
But depending on the device or screen size, plenty of others hit unnecessary friction, some even had to rotate their phone or switch to a larger screen just to click a button that should have been simple to reach.
After the fix, sales increased by around 20%.
That experience taught me something worth repeating: sometimes the problem isn't that customers don't want to buy. The problem is that your website is quietly making it harder for them to.
And here's the part that stings a little: most people won't rotate their phone, open another browser, or hunt for a workaround. They'll just leave, and you'll likely never know why.
Broken Links Are More Than an Annoyance
One of the things I personally check right after launching any website is broken links, links that no longer lead where they're supposed to, usually dumping the visitor on a 404 instead. Beyond the poor experience, broken links can also affect how search engines crawl and understand your site.
Imagine a potential customer reading about your service, clicking "Learn More," and landing on a page that simply doesn't exist. Or clicking "Contact Us" and finding an unfinished page instead of a way to reach you. Every one of those moments gives a visitor another quiet reason to leave.
Launching Isn't the Finish Line
I've made these mistakes myself. Early in my journey, I experimented across different tools, coding directly, Webflow, Mobirise, WordPress, before settling more into coding. Looking back at some of those earlier projects, I can spot mistakes I wouldn't make today. But I'm still proud of them. They were part of actually learning the craft.
One lesson that's stuck with me: building the website is only part of the job. Once it's live, real people use it in ways you didn't fully anticipate, different phones, different screen sizes, different browsers, different connection speeds, clicking things in an order you never tested for. That's usually when hidden problems surface. A site can look flawless on your own device and still have a button that's hidden or unreachable on someone else's smaller screen.
What Should You Actually Check?
You don't need to be a developer to start asking the right questions about your own website.
Do your important buttons actually work? Click them yourself. Does "Buy Now" lead where it should? Does "Contact Us" genuinely make it easy to reach you?
Are there broken links or 404 pages? Walk through your site like a first-time visitor, navigation, footer, blog posts, key pages, and fix or redirect anything that leads nowhere.
Does it actually work on mobile? Don't just resize a browser window and assume it's fine, test on real devices and different screen sizes. For many businesses, mobile is the primary way customers experience the site at all.
Are visitors dropping off somewhere specific? This is where analytics earns its keep. Are people viewing products but rarely adding to cart? Adding to cart but abandoning before checkout? Starting a form and never finishing it? Data won't always tell you exactly why, but it tells you where to start looking.
Are your pages actually finished? Placeholder text, empty sections, outdated information, missing images, half-built features, these happen more often than most businesses realize. And if part of your website feels unfinished, customers may start wondering what else isn't getting the attention it needs.
Customers Shouldn't Have to Figure Out Your Website
This might be the core lesson in all of this. Customers shouldn't need technical knowledge to use your site. They shouldn't have to understand browsers, switch to desktop mode, rotate their phone, or guess where a link is supposed to lead.
A good website should guide people naturally toward whatever they came to do, buying, booking, reading, or contacting you, without making the process feel like work. Because the moment it does feel like work, some percentage of visitors simply decide it's not worth it. And unlike an error message, a lost customer rarely tells you why they left.
Why Website Analysis Matters
This is exactly why I don't believe a website should just be built, handed over, and forgotten. As a web developer and web analyst, that ongoing analysis, understanding visitor behavior, identifying drop-off points, testing buttons and forms, checking for broken or unfinished pages, verifying the experience across devices, is where a lot of quiet, costly friction actually gets found.
And often, the fix isn't a full redesign. It's something small: a button in the wrong position, one broken link, a form silently failing to submit, a mobile layout issue nobody caught. The real value is knowing the problem exists in the first place, instead of assuming customers simply weren't interested.
Don't Just Ask If Your Website Is Online
Ask whether it's actually working. Ask whether customers can do what they came to do. Ask whether you're quietly losing people somewhere along the way without realizing it.
A website can be beautifully designed, fully hosted, and visible on Google, and still be failing the people trying to use it. Launching it is an achievement. It's not the finish line.
Check it. Test it. Analyze it. Improve it. Sometimes the difference between a lost customer and a completed sale isn't a new marketing campaign or a full redesign. It's simply finding the one small thing that was quietly getting in their way.
If you own a business in Cameroon and you're not sure whether your website is actually performing the way it should, a closer look often reveals things you haven't noticed yet. At Chesea Dev, I work as a web developer and web analyst, helping businesses understand how their websites are actually performing and what can be improved.
Because your website shouldn't just look like it works. It should actually work for the people you're trying to reach.
