When preparing a voiceover script, video presentation, or YouTube content, timing is everything. A script that looks short on paper can easily run over time if pacing isn't accounted for beforehand.
Here is how you can estimate exact speaking duration based on average speech rates.
The Baseline Math
The standard conversational speech rate for video narration ranges between 130 and 150 Words Per Minute (WPM).
- Fast Delivery (Shorts, Reels, Ads): 160 – 175 WPM
- Normal Pacing (Vlogs, Explainer Videos): 130 – 150 WPM
- Slow / Instructional (Tutorials, Lectures): 100 – 120 WPM
To calculate your video runtime manually:
Duration (Minutes) = Total Word Count ÷ Target WPM
Example: A 300-word script read at 150 WPM equals exactly 2 minutes of spoken runtime (excluding pauses and visual transitions).
Automating the Calculation
Instead of running manual calculations for every script revision, you can use this online video length calculator to instantly test your script runtime across slow, average, and fast speeds.
Key Production Tips:
- Always add 10-15 seconds for visual transitions and pauses.
- Read your script out loud—internal reading is always faster than real speech.
