1. Keyword-Driven Framework
A Keyword-Driven Framework (also known as table-driven testing) abstracts technical implementation steps into high-level business keywords or action words (e.g., login, click_element, verify_text).
How it works: Test cases are written as a sequence of keywords, often stored in external files (like Excel sheets, JSON, or YAML) rather than raw code.
Key Advantage: Non-technical stakeholders, manual QA engineers, or product owners can read, write, and understand test cases because they resemble plain English business workflows.
Trade-off: High initial setup cost; you must write underlying "engine code" to parse and execute each keyword.
2. Data-Driven Framework
A Data-Driven Framework separates the test script logic from the test input data.
How it works: A single test script is written once, but it executes multiple times against different data sets loaded from external sources like JSON files, CSVs, or databases.
Key Advantage: Dramatically reduces code duplication. Instead of writing 20 separate tests for 20 different user login combinations, you write one test and feed it an array of 20 data rows (using mechanisms like Pytest parameterization).
Trade-off: Requires robust data management to prevent stale test data or state pollution between iterations.
3. Hybrid Framework
A Hybrid Framework combines two or more architectural patterns to leverage their collective strengths while mitigating their individual weaknesses.
How it works: In your target Playwright stack, a hybrid framework merges Keyword-Driven modularity (using Page Object Model actions), Data-Driven flexibility (feeding external JSON/CSV datasets), and API/Database validation layers into a single cohesive structure.
Key Advantage: Maximum flexibility, reusability, and scalability. It allows you to handle complex end-to-end scenarios (e.g., creating a user via API, verifying the UI state, and checking the PostgreSQL database) seamlessly.
Trade-off: Requires a structured design approach and disciplined folder organization.
4. Robot Framework
Robot Framework is a popular, generic open-source automation framework built on Python that natively implements a keyword-driven testing style.
How it works: It uses tabular or plain-text syntax where test cases are written using human-readable keywords. It relies on specific libraries to interact with systems (e.g., the Browser library powered by Playwright, RequestsLibrary for APIs, and Database libraries).
Key Advantage: Out-of-the-box keyword syntax, rich reporting (HTML logs and execution reports automatically generated), and a massive ecosystem of pre-built libraries.
Trade-off: Uses a custom domain-specific language (DSL) syntax rather than pure Python code, which can feel restrictive if you prefer writing pure object-oriented Python and Pytest hooks.
