The challenge is maintaining that specificity consistently rather than defaulting to positioning statements as the brand grows.
Honest Limitations of This Framework
A few things this checklist cannot resolve:
Consumer capacity. Even buyers who want detailed disclosures often lack the time or background to evaluate them meaningfully. Transparency that requires specialist knowledge to interpret isn't genuinely accessible — it just shifts the information asymmetry rather than resolving it.
Competitive intelligence risk. Detailed supply chain disclosure is replicable by competitors. This is a genuine disincentive for brands with differentiated sourcing practices, not just an excuse. It's worth factoring in when assessing why a brand might be less specific than ideal.
Certification variance. Not all certification schemes are equally rigorous. A brand citing a certification is a positive signal, but it's the start of an assessment, not the end of one.
Where This Leaves Us
The transparency expectation is not going to recede — regulatory pressure and consumer scepticism both push in the same direction. Brands treating it as a narrative exercise rather than a verifiable commitment are increasingly out of step with the market.
For anyone evaluating products with any degree of care, the practical position is consistent: look past the narrative to the evidence, weight third-party verification above self-reported metrics, and treat specificity as the primary signal of credibility. Vague commitments are becoming less tenable as the standards for substantiation continue to develop.
