AI Books Are Crowding Amazon. Here's What Real Authors Can Still Do.
A Columbia study found per-title revenue fell ~20% since 2023. Visibility is now the whole game โ here's how to win it without gimmicks.
A few weeks ago a study made the rounds: researchers looked at 14,419 self-published titles on Amazon and found the catalog grew 38x since January 2023, while revenue per sold book fell roughly a fifth. Even books with no detectable AI content saw their per-title earnings drop. The takeaway isn't "quit" โ it's that being discoverable matters more than ever. In a sea of cheap AI slop, the authors who win are the ones whose books get found.
I publish on KDP too, and this is the frame I now use for everything: findability is the moat. Here's what that means in practice, plus the free tools I built for it.
1. The 7 keyword slots are the real battlefield
Amazon matches shopper search phrases against your 7 keyword slots (50 chars each). In a crowded catalog, that's where you sink or swim.
- Don't repeat your title โ Amazon already indexes it. Use the slots for new phrases.
- Don't use commas โ a comma splits a slot in two and wastes it. Spaces only.
- Mix broad and specific โ a generic term plus a few long-tail phrases like "number tracing workbook for toddlers".
The authors who treat keywords as an afterthought are the ones the AI flood drowns. The ones who fill all 7 slots with distinct, shopper-typed phrases stay visible.
If you want to see exactly how the slots work with real examples, my KDP keywords guide walks through the formula.
2. Your title is the first filter
Shoppers scroll fast. A title that states what it is + who it's for gets the click; a clever-but-vague one gets scrolled past โ right past your book and onto the next 500.

Don't spend a week agonizing. Generate 6 strong candidates, pick one, and move on. The free title generator gives you exactly that in 30 seconds.
3. The description converts โ or it doesn't
The description is your landing page. Lead with the benefit in the first two lines (Amazon truncates the rest), add a hook, and use short paragraphs and bullets so skimmers can parse it.
This is where most self-pub descriptions die: they're one giant wall of text. Format it, break it up, and your conversion rate will reflect it.
The free description formatter turns plain text into the bold/italic/bullet formatting KDP descriptions need โ paste, click, done.
4. One caveat about the AI-noise problem
None of this beats writing a genuinely good book. But "good" without visibility is a diary with a cover. The ranking factors you can control โ keywords, title, description, categories โ are exactly the levers that differentiate you in a flooded market. Use them all.
The shortcut
You don't need to remember any of this โ I built a KDP keywords guide with a free generator that fills all 7 slots for you:
- Niche-matched phrases ready to paste into KDP
- 3 free uses, no signup
- Runs entirely in your browser, nothing uploaded
