Both platforms are free, both let you set a canonical URL back to your own site, and both have an audience of working developers. That makes the choice look arbitrary. It isn't — they distribute your writing in fundamentally different ways, and that difference decides which one is worth your time.
The core difference: a feed versus a domain
dev.to is a community with a feed. Your post enters a shared stream that everyone on the platform sees. Reach comes from the platform's algorithm and its readers. You are a participant in someone else's publication.
Hashnode is a publishing tool with a community attached. You get your own blog — on a subdomain, or on your own custom domain for free — and Hashnode also surfaces posts in a feed. You are running your own publication that happens to have distribution.
Everything else follows from that.
What this means in practice
On dev.to, a post that lands well can reach tens of thousands of people who have never heard of you. The tag system genuinely works, and the community is active in the comments. But the reach belongs to the platform. If you stop posting, you disappear, and there is no asset left behind that is yours.
On Hashnode, a post reaches far fewer people on day one. What you get instead is a blog on your own domain that accumulates. Two years of writing on your custom domain is an asset with its own search presence. Two years of writing on dev.to is two years of contributions to dev.to.
Canonical URLs work correctly on both
This matters more than it sounds. Both platforms let you specify rel="canonical" pointing at the original post on your own site, and both honour it properly. So cross-posting to either does not create a duplicate-content problem — search engines are told which copy is authoritative.
If you already have a blog, this is the correct setup: publish on your own site first, then cross-post with the canonical pointing home.
One caveat worth knowing: on Hashnode the canonical field is not on the main editor screen. It is under the Discovery tab in the post settings, which is easy to miss entirely.
The things that will actually catch you out
We run several publications across both platforms, so a few practical notes that don't appear in feature comparisons.
dev.to takes coordinated posting very seriously. If you run multiple accounts — say, one per product or brand — and they all post links pointing back to the same destination, expect that to be flagged. The pattern reads as promotional cross-posting regardless of whether a human wrote the articles and regardless of your canonical tags. This is a reasonable policy, but it catches people who thought they were doing normal content marketing. One brand account per company, posting things that stand on their own, is the safe shape.
Hashnode's free tier is one publication. This is the single most important pricing fact and it is easy to miss. If you want several separate publications — one per product, say — each additional one needs a Pro seat. For a company with eight brands, that is a real monthly cost, not a rounding error. For an individual with one blog, the free tier is genuinely complete and there is nothing to pay.
Hashnode's API can't create publications. You can automate posting through its GraphQL API, but creating the publication itself is a manual step in the dashboard. If you were planning to script the whole setup, plan for that.
dev.to's API is simpler and more forgiving. A single API key, a straightforward REST endpoint. If you are automating cross-posting, dev.to is noticeably less work.
Which one to choose
Choose dev.to if you want readers now, you are building a personal reputation in a community, or you are writing the kind of practical post that does well in a feed — debugging stories, tool comparisons, "how I built X". Accept that the audience is rented.
Choose Hashnode if you want a blog you own, you care about long-term search presence on your own domain, and you are willing to build an audience slowly. The custom domain on the free tier is genuinely generous.
Choose both if you already publish on your own site. Cross-post to both with canonicals pointing home, and treat them as distribution rather than as your archive. This is the option most people should take, and it costs almost nothing beyond the initial setup.
The honest summary
If you are asking which single platform to write on, the question contains a mistake. Neither should be the only place your writing lives, because on both platforms you are building on land you don't own.
Write on your own site. Cross-post to dev.to for reach and to Hashnode for a second indexed home. Set the canonical every time. That way the platform that eventually changes its algorithm, its pricing, or its moderation policy — and one of them will — takes nothing with it that you cannot replace.
