I became a father with no baby-care experience and the usual problem: there was plenty of trustworthy information, but it was scattered across long articles, PDFs, videos, and advice from different people.
At 3 a.m., “comprehensive” is often the opposite of useful.
So I built Best Dad, a free iPhone app that turns each baby stage into short practical actions, activities, safety reminders, and a quick overview. I am the maker, and I built it because I am a new dad.
This post is not about pretending that an app can replace a pediatrician, midwife, or parent community. It is about what building for exhausted users taught me.
1. Design for the next useful action
A sleep-deprived parent rarely opens an app to “explore content.” He has a much smaller question:
- What can I do with my baby right now?
- What is normal at this stage?
- What should I watch for?
- Where is the full explanation if I need it?
That changed the dashboard. The first screen now leads with two choices: a quick overview or the full stage guide. Detailed knowledge remains available, but it no longer blocks the next action.
The broader product lesson: define the smallest decision your user is trying to make, then make that decision visible before your information architecture.
2. Short copy still needs a safety hierarchy
Reducing words is not the same as removing context.
For baby care, every short card has to distinguish between:
- an everyday idea,
- a safety reminder,
- a reason to call a doctor,
- an emergency.
If these categories look alike, the interface creates false confidence. We used clearer labels and separated urgent guidance from ordinary activities.
The lesson applies well beyond health-adjacent products: concise interfaces need stronger hierarchy, not weaker caveats.
3. Personalization can be simple
The app does not need a complex recommendation engine to feel relevant. A baby's current week or stage already changes which overview, activity, and “coming up” note should appear.
That single piece of context makes a big difference. It also keeps the app understandable: users can see why they are receiving a suggestion.
Simple, legible rules often beat clever personalization that users cannot inspect.
4. Localization is product work
The app supports English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Swedish, and Polish, following the iOS language by default with an in-app switch.
Translation was only the first layer. Temperature, measurements, sentence length, navigation labels, and the tone of advice also had to work locally. A technically correct translation can still feel tiring or strange to a new parent.
We aimed for the voice of an experienced friend: calm, gentle, and direct.
5. Feedback questions must be specific
“Any feedback?” is easy to ignore. These questions are more useful:
- Which screen is too slow when you have one free hand?
- What would you want answered during a difficult night?
- Which activity would you actually try today?
- Where does the app sound confident when it should be more cautious?
That is the feedback I am looking for now.
