The Real Split Is Not “On-Chain vs Regulated”

People compare Polymarket and Kalshi as if the important difference is KYC, geography, or chain vs centralized matching.

For a short-horizon BTC bot, those matter later.

The first difference is simpler:

What exact number decides Up vs Down?

If you get that wrong, every signal, backtest, and scratch rule is solving the wrong problem.

Two Venues, Two Official Averages

Both platforms moved away from “whatever the last print was.”

Both now settle short BTC contracts on a one-minute average.

They do not use the same average.

Same word — “60-second average.”

Different index. Different sampling. Different product clock.

Why Both Platforms Converged on 60 Seconds

Snapshot settlement created the same failure mode everywhere:

A brief push into one venue’s book
A wick at the exact close
Retail on the wrong side of a coin-flip ticket

Polymarket’s 5-minute books made that problem famous. Research around those markets documented large settlement-window gains for a small set of wallets. The platform response was explicit: replace the snapshot with Chainlink TWAP.

Kalshi never made the 5-minute product the flagship. Its shortest BTC up/down is 15 minutes, and crypto settlement is already defined as a 60-second average of the CF Benchmarks real-time index. Same defensive idea: force any attacker to hold the print for a full minute, not a few seconds.

The industry conclusion is now obvious:

Short crypto binaries cannot be trusted if one tick can decide the payout.

The Trap: “60 Seconds” Does Not Mean “Same Target”

This is the part most copy-paste bots miss.

Open and close both belong to the same TWAP family
Best mental model: where is the official average path heading versus open?

Kalshi 60s average

Simple average of the CF Benchmarks real-time index over the final minute
Multi-exchange institutional index, not “Binance last”
Strike is set by the contract, not necessarily “your local TWAP at t=0”
Best mental model: will the final-minute CF average finish above the strike?

If you train on Polymarket TWAP and fire the same trigger on Kalshi, you are transferring a correlation, not a settlement identity.

Why I Still Specialize on Polymarket BTC 5m

The abrownfox001 engine is a 5-minute specialist.

That choice is not ideology. It is product shape:

288 BTC 5m slots per day
Coin-flip books near 50¢
Official live TWAP path available during the slot
Fast enough that scratch logic can recycle capital
Slow enough, after TWAP60, that last-tick sniping is no longer the main game

Kalshi’s 15-minute BTC contract is a cousin, not a clone:

Longer horizon
Different index
Different liquidity and fee regime
Different open/strike convention
No native 5-minute equivalent in the same way

A 15-minute model can be useful. It is not a drop-in replacement for a 5-minute TWAP path follower.

The Bot Question This Series Is Built Around

Do not start with “which platform is better?”

Start with this:

What series does the venue actually pay?
Can I stream that series live, not just reconstruct it after the fact?
Is the open reference from the same family as the close?
Is the product 5 minutes or 15 minutes?
After fees and scratch costs, is there still room for a mid-band directional read?

Polymarket TWAP60 answers those questions one way.

Kalshi’s CF 60-second close answers them another way.

Same trader instinct. Different state machine.
