x402 Python SDK v2.21: Sei Chain, Payment Flows, and a Batch Settlement Guard

The x402 Foundation tagged pypi-x402 v2.21.0 yesterday — the Python payment-protocol SDK that handles client, server, and facilitator wiring for FastAPI, Flask, httpx, and requests. Three things shipped worth a closer look if you build on the Python side of the rail.

Sei is in

v2.21.0 adds Sei mainnet (chain ID 1329) and Sei testnet (1328), both with native USDC as the default stablecoin. That brings the Python SDK's chain list to parity with the TypeScript and Go SDKs, which picked up Sei in the same release train.

If you're running a FastAPI-based x402 server and want to accept Sei payments: pip install x402[fastapi]>=2.21.0 and add the chain to your asset config. Client, facilitator, and server components all resolve Sei addresses and settlement out of the box.

Payment flows: authorization, upfront, escrow

The bigger architectural addition is payment-flow handlers. Schemes can now declare their verify/settle ordering — authorization (verify first, settle later), upfront (pay-then-serve), or escrow (lock, deliver, release) — and the SDK generates the corresponding HTTP and MCP settlement receipts for each pattern.

Until now, every scheme implemented its own flow logic. The new abstraction means a facilitator can inspect the declared flow type, route accordingly, and return typed receipts across EVM, Solana, and TON. It doesn't change what end users see, but it makes multi-chain facilitator code dramatically simpler to write and audit.

The quiet fix: batch-settlement state validation

The one most operators will scroll past, and the one that matters most: v2.21.0 validates cumulative amounts before persisting batch-settlement channel state. Previously, an untrusted batch-settlement response could write state that didn't match cumulative on-chain reality. Now the SDK checks the math and skips the write when the numbers don't add up.

Same release also restored Ethereum mainnet and Avalanche C-Chain USDC as default assets — they'd been dropped during a CAIP-2 table migration in v2.20.0 and needed to come back for backward compatibility.

What it means

v2.21.0 is a maintenance release that carries architectural weight. Payment flows are the kind of abstraction that makes the next ten features cheaper to build. The batch-settlement guard is pure defensive engineering. If you're running Python x402 infrastructure, upgrade.
