Overview of the New Pre‑Order Model
Asus has officially confirmed that the Xbox Ally X20 handheld can now be pre‑ordered as a standalone device. The $1,300 unit will ship on October 15 and is available through both the Asus online store and major retailers such as Best Buy. Previously, the handheld could only be purchased as part of a bundle that included a pair of AR glasses. The removal of that requirement simplifies the buying process and reduces the entry price for gamers who are primarily interested in the PC‑style handheld itself.
The device retains the translucent chassis with gold trim that first appeared on the ROG 20th Anniversary handheld, a limited‑edition model that Asus used to showcase premium build quality. According to Asus spokesperson Don Nguyen, the Ally X20 is “the same basic ROG 20th Anniversary handheld I tried at its US offices,” confirming that the internal architecture has not changed despite the new ordering option.

Display & Audio
The OLED panel is a standout feature, delivering deep blacks and vibrant colors that make the Xbox ecosystem’s UI look crisp. At 120 Hz, the screen can keep up with the Z1 Extreme’s frame rates, reducing motion blur in fast‑paced shooters. Asus has also equipped the Ally X20 with a dual‑speaker setup tuned by Harman Kardon, delivering clear mids and punchy bass for on‑the‑go sessions. The 3.5 mm jack remains, allowing gamers to plug in their favorite headphones without latency concerns.
Battery Life & Portability
A 62 Wh battery is sizable for a handheld, but the power‑hungry Z1 Extreme means real‑world endurance will vary. In the “balanced” power profile, Asus claims roughly 5‑6 hours of gameplay at 1080p/60 fps, while the “performance” mode (max boost clock) drops that to around 3‑4 hours. The device weighs 1.3 kg (2.86 lb), making it heavier than the Nintendo Switch but comparable to other high‑end Windows handhelds. The translucent chassis with gold trim adds a premium feel without compromising ergonomics; the grips are rubberized and the thumbsticks feature magnetic detents for precise control.
Software & Ecosystem
Running Windows 11, the Ally X20 supports the full Xbox app, Game Pass Ultimate, and Xbox Cloud Gaming (xCloud). Asus has bundled the Asus Armoury Crate utility, which lets users toggle performance profiles, monitor thermals, and adjust fan curves. The device also supports external GPU (eGPU) enclosures via its Thunderbolt‑compatible USB‑C port, opening the door for docked gaming at desktop‑class performance.
Pricing, Availability & Shipping

The removal of the mandatory AR‑glasses bundle trims the entry cost and eliminates the confusion around the “mixed‑reality” angle that some reviewers found gimmicky. Customers who still want the glasses can purchase them separately; Asus has not announced any discount for bundled purchases.
Pros & Cons
🔹 ------
• Cons: ------
🔹 Premium OLED display with 120 Hz refresh
• Cons: Heavier than most handhelds, affecting comfort on long sessions
🔹 High‑end Ryzen Z1 Extreme CPU for desktop‑class performance
• Cons: Battery life limited under max‑performance settings
🔹 User‑replaceable SSD for storage upgrades
• Cons: No built‑in kickstand; requires a case or accessory for tabletop play
🔹 Gold‑trim translucent chassis – unique aesthetic
• Cons: AR glasses no longer bundled, requiring a separate purchase for mixed‑reality fans
🔹 Full Windows 11 ecosystem + Xbox Game Pass integration
• Cons: Slightly higher price point compared to competing Windows handhelds
Verdict
Asus’s decision to let you order the Xbox Ally X20 without the AR‑glasses bundle is a welcome move that clarifies the product’s core value proposition: a premium, Windows‑based handheld for serious gamers.
