What Nothing OS 5.0 Brings

Nothing OS 5.0 is based on Android 17 and represents the company's second major OS update for its smartphone lineup. Nothing calls it a "major software evolution" rather than a complete redesign, packing 80+ individual changes into the release.

The open beta starts August 26, 2026 on the Nothing Phone (3). Stable releases begin mid-October 2026 and continue through January 2027 across the device lineup.

Design Changes

The update refreshes Nothing's minimalist aesthetic with several visual shifts. App icons and widgets can now pull colors directly from your wallpaper, updating dynamically when you change backgrounds. Nothing calls this an "additional theme" option, letting users keep the brand's monochrome character while adding color accents when they want them.

Translucent widget accents with frosted-glass effects add a new visual layer to the home screen. System-wide typography uses the Geist font for a cleaner appearance. Two new lock screen clock designs join the lineup: "Gooey," a bubbly fluid design, and "Micrographics," an information-dense alternative.

Split swipe gestures separate notifications from Quick Settings. Swipe left for notifications, right for Quick Settings. The split reduces accidental triggers.

Glyph Interface Gets Its Own App

Nothing's Glyph Light system now has a dedicated app that centralizes all Matrix controls, features, and customization options. No more digging through Settings menus.

A new Glyph Timer Widget lets you start countdowns directly from the home screen. Flipping the phone face-down activates the Glyph Matrix display, making timer management faster than opening the Clock app. Additional lighting patterns and improved responsiveness round out the updates.

AI Upgrades

Nothing expands its Essential AI suite with several changes. Voice transcription now shows a live preview of text as it processes, giving cleaner real-time results.

Model Context Protocol (MCP) support enters Essential Space, enabling more sophisticated AI workflows. Smart Collections automatically sort captures into themed folders. The new Essential Apps Builder lets users describe, build, and deploy custom AI-powered applications directly on their phone without coding. An overnight memory maintenance feature optimizes background app retention and system resources while charging.

Widgets and Customization

Several new home screen widgets add functionality. The Away Time Widget tracks how long you haven't used your phone, supporting mindful device usage. Collector Widget turns photos of personal items into sticker-like widgets for the home or lock screen. Existing Nothing widgets gain resizable dot-matrix options. Batch icon management lets you select and move multiple home screen icons at once. Status bar icons now feature subtle animations for actions like toggling airplane mode.

Android 17 Platform Improvements

Built on Android 17, Nothing OS 5.0 inherits Google's platform updates. Quick Share works cross-platform between iPhone and Android via QR code. Noto 3D emojis bring richer messaging visuals. Dark theme coverage expands across more system components. Window management and multitasking controls improve. Memory management gets better app limits and background process handling.

Device Rollout Timeline

Nothing Phone (1), Nothing Phone (2), and CMF Phone 1 will not receive the update. Those devices have completed their promised update cycles.

Open beta access requires the Nothing Beta Hub app v2.0 (distributed as an APK). Stable releases come through normal OTA updates.

Conclusion

Nothing OS 5.0 delivers meaningful improvements across design, AI, and customization. The dedicated Glyph app and Essential Apps Builder stand out as features that differentiate Nothing's approach from stock Android and other OEM skins. For existing Nothing users, the update addresses long-standing requests while maintaining the brand's design philosophy.

Open beta access begins today for Phone (3) owners. Install the Nothing Beta Hub app to join. Stable releases follow through late 2026.
