Building DreamHome: A Modern Real Estate Platform with the MERN Stack

The Problem

Real estate platforms often force users into a frustrating choice: either browse a
long, unfiltered list of properties, or wrestle with clunky search tools that don't
match how people actually look for a home. I wanted to build something that felt
closer to how a good real estate agent works — letting users narrow down listings
quickly with spatial and criteria-based search, without the interface getting in
the way.

That's what led me to build DreamHome — a real estate web platform for
exploring, listing, and managing luxury properties, with a focus on making search
and filtering feel fast and intuitive.

Tech Stack

I chose the MERN stack because it let me move fast on both the API and UI layers
using a single language (JavaScript) across the whole application, and MongoDB's
document model was a natural fit for property listings, which have a lot of
variable, nested attributes (amenities, media, location data, pricing tiers).

Key Features

• Spatial search and advanced filtering — users can narrow listings by location, price range, property type, and amenities without page reloads
• Property listing and management — property owners/agents can create, update, and manage their listings through a dedicated interface
• Secure authentication — JWT-based auth protects user accounts and listing management actions
• Responsive design — built to work cleanly across desktop and mobile, since most real estate browsing happens on the go

Challenges

Building the search and filtering system was the most interesting part of this
project. Real estate data doesn't fit neatly into simple equality filters — a
user searching for "3-bedroom apartments near downtown under $500K" is really
combining multiple filter types (range queries, location proximity, categorical
matches) into a single request. Structuring the MongoDB queries and API endpoints
to handle this combination efficiently, without the API becoming slow or the
frontend logic becoming a tangle of conditionals, took a fair amount of iteration.

Authentication was another area I paid close attention to — since property
management actions (creating/editing listings) needed to be properly gated behind
JWT-verified sessions, while browsing and search remained open to all users.

Outcome

DreamHome is live and functional, giving users a platform to explore luxury
properties with search that actually narrows down results the way people expect,
rather than dumping an unfiltered list on them. You can see it live here:
