Every service of this kind asks for the same thing: a handful of photographs of your face from different angles. That is where the portrait comes from, and it is also where the only real question lives.
Two searches, not a full read
The direct treatment of whether this is safe covers the ground. The practical version is two Ctrl-F searches in whatever terms the vendor publishes.
A retention period with a number in it. Not a paragraph about caring — a figure. A service that keeps your source photographs indefinitely rarely says so; it says so by omitting the number.
The word "training". Not "is my data shared", which is a different question with a more comforting answer. Whether the images feed the model that serves other people. Silence there is itself an answer.
Why it is a different category of data
One photograph is an image. Fifteen of the same person from different perspectives is a set from which the shape of that face can be computed. Noticing that difference is not paranoia, it is accuracy.
What the process actually feels like
Shorter and less controllable than expected. The experience end to end is upload, wait, choose — and the choosing is where most of the quality difference lands, because a poor selection ruins a good batch.
Budget an hour for selection. Everyone skips it and it affects the result more than the vendor choice.
The version most people need
Not a job-application photograph. The plain professional portrait is lower stakes and more common, and the reason it never gets done is not cost — it is that it requires deciding to, then a date, then travel.
The version that has nothing to do with work
Yearbook-style images are the clean counterexample to the professional framing. Same technique, different purpose, and the quality bar inverts: for a work portrait likeness is everything, for a stylised one it barely matters.
Worth separating, because otherwise people apply the wrong standard and conclude the technology is worse than it is.
At company scale it stops being about images
Brand compliance is where the requirement becomes a specification: background value, crop ratio, aspect — decided once, applied to everyone, and the opposite of choosing what suits each face.
And if you want to know what it runs on
The infrastructure page is unusually specific for a vendor. Most companies in this category will not tell you, which is itself worth noticing.
