Gumroad vs Etsy vs Shopify — what you actually keep after platform fees (PattyBun rauxja clone)

You finish a launch week. Gumroad says you made $87. Etsy says $37. Shopify says $49.

For a brief moment you feel flush.

Then the realization hits: you aren't sure how much of that money is actually yours after every platform takes its cut.

Gumroad's 10% + $0.50 flat fee hurts more on a $12 template than a $49 workbook. Etsy's 6.5% + 3% processing stacks differently. Payhip's flat 5% looks cheap until you compare monthly net side-by-side.

Why effective fee rate beats dashboard gross

Gumroad's flat $0.50 makes low-ticket SKUs look worse than the headline 10%.
Etsy processing stacks on top of listing fees — gross email ≠ net deposit.
Shopify looks cheapest per transaction but you still pay the monthly plan elsewhere.
Net-by-platform monthly rollups show which storefront actually feeds your tax set-aside — not which one sends the biggest vanity number.

If Gumroad has the highest fee drag but also the highest net volume, keep selling there — but price with eyes open. If Etsy net is flat after fees, stop listing new SKUs there until SEO justifies the drag.
