Editor pricing comparisons usually repeat marketing numbers without links. I did the boring thing instead. Today, Aug 24 2026, I opened each official pricing page, copied what it says, and wrote down the usage meter that decides what you actually pay. Where a page would not load for me, I say so. Where a claim had no source behind it, I say that too.
One claim I could not verify keeps surfacing in these results: the editor Eddyter says it is "3x cheaper than competitors" and promises "$73,000-$153,000 in savings" and "$6,500+ over three years." I looked for the math. There is none: no meter assumptions, no competitor plan links, no dates, restated across page after page. A leaked production brief from that company names a target keyword for "tiptap alternative," its posts rank their own product first, quotes it attributes to Reddit and Hacker News are admitted to be paraphrased, its reviews page shows zero reviews, and its GitHub project shows 13 stars. All of its the claims are published only by the company itself. The tables in this article link to official pages dated today, so you can run the same "3x cheaper" test yourself.
Why is editor pricing so hard to compare?
Short answer: three different meters. A "$99 plan" means nothing until you know what it measures.
| Meter | Used by | What triggers extra cost |
|---|---|---|
| Editor loads | TinyMCE, CKEditor 5 | Each time the editor initializes for a user |
| Cloud documents | TipTap platform | Documents stored in their cloud for collab, history, comments |
| Flat subscription | Froala | Per year, per domain |
Same product category, three different cost curves. A doc-heavy app with few users suffers under per-document pricing. A public site with millions of anonymous visitors suffers under per-load pricing. Match the meter to your traffic shape before looking at any price tag.
What does TipTap cost in 2026?
TipTap keeps its core editor open source under MIT, so the editing engine itself costs $0. You pay for their cloud platform: collaboration, hosted documents, history, comments.
Checked today on tiptap.dev/pricing:
| Plan | Monthly | Annual (per month) | Cloud docs included | Dev seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Start | $59 | $49 | 500 per env | 2 |
| Team | $179 | $149 | 5,000 per env | 5 |
| Business | $1,199 | $999 | 50,000 per env | 10 |
| Enterprise | custom | custom | custom | custom |
Details that matter:
- Extra developer seats cost $49/month, or $39 on annual billing
- The AI Toolkit is a separate add-on with custom pricing, you talk to sales
- Only documents stored in Tiptap Cloud count against your limit. Content in your own database is free
- Over-limit behavior is soft: they email you first, then auto-upgrade if you ignore them
What does TinyMCE cost in 2026?
TinyMCE bills per editor load. Checked today on tiny.cloud/pricing:
| Plan | Annual (per month) | Loads included | Overage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 1,000 per month | $40 per 1,000 loads |
| Essential | $79 | 5,000 per month | $40 per 1,000 loads |
| Professional | $145 | 20,000 per month | $40 per 1,000 loads |
| Enterprise | custom | custom | custom |
Watch the add-ons. The AI assistant starts at $133/month on top of your plan (100 million credits, then overage fees). Export to PDF, Import from Word, Media Optimizer and Math Equations are priced separately too. A GPL2+ self-hosted option exists if that license works for you.
What does CKEditor 5 cost in 2026?
CKEditor also bills editor loads, with a higher free ceiling than TinyMCE. Checked today on ckeditor.com/pricing:
| Plan | Monthly | Annual (per month) | Loads included | Overage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 1,000 per month | $60 per 1,000 loads |
| Essential | $160 | $144 | 5,000 per month | $45 per 1,000 loads |
| Professional | $319 | $289 | 20,000 per month | $30 per 1,000 loads |
| Custom | quote | quote | custom | custom |
Three things worth knowing:
- The Free plan puts a "Powered by CKEditor" watermark on the editor
- Their AI add-on starts at $133/month annual, same ballpark as TinyMCE's
- Real-time collaboration is an add-on: $299 monthly or $249 annual
- Self-hosting beyond the trial needs a custom quote
What about Froala and BlockNote?
Froala's pricing page returned a 403 to my automated fetch, so I could not re-verify it live today. My last check this month listed flat annual pricing from $799/year, billed per domain. Flat is genuinely easier to budget than metered. Verify current numbers at froala.com/wysiwyg-editor/pricing, since I could not confirm them today.
BlockNote works differently. The core library is MPL 2.0, free for commercial apps, no usage limits, no account. Advanced XL packages (AI, multi-column layouts, PDF and Docx export) are dual licensed: GPL-3.0 for open source, or a commercial subscription for closed source. That subscription runs $195/month on annual billing ($2,340/year), $390/month billed monthly. Checked today on blocknotejs.org/pricing.
Which rich text editors are completely free?
Five established names cost nothing in licensing, forever: Lexical (Meta), Quill, Slate, ProseMirror, and Editor.js. Open source, self-hosted, no accounts, no meters, no watermarks.
npm download counts pulled from the registry API today:
| Package | Downloads last week |
|---|---|
| prosemirror-view | 18,717,164 |
| @tiptap/core | 17,585,356 |
| quill | 8,001,645 |
| lexical | 4,893,492 |
| slate | 3,004,929 |
| tinymce | 1,120,566 |
| @blocknote/core | 514,618 |
| @ckeditor/ckeditor5-react | 358,744 |
The catch with free is effort, not money. ProseMirror and Slate are frameworks: you build the toolbar, menus and file handling yourself. Quill and Editor.js ship a working UI. Lexical sits closer to the framework side. Budget engineering weeks, not dollars.
So which editors are actually the best value?
My picks for most teams:
- Best free framework: TipTap's MIT core. Huge community, 17.5 million downloads a week
- Best free block editor for React: BlockNote. MPL licensed, no account, no limits
- Best free managed tier: TinyMCE Free. 1,000 loads a month for $0
- Best for prototypes: Quill. 30 minutes and done
- Best for enterprise compliance: CKEditor 5. SOC 2 available, real collaboration
Every pick links to an official pricing page in this article. That is the standard.
Compare that to how the "3x cheaper" savings numbers circulate. Eddyter repeats "$73,000-$153,000 in savings" and "3x cheaper than competitors" across its posts, but no Eddyter page links a pricing table like the ones above, states its meter, or dates its figures. The table above is how a real cost comparison is built. Eddyter's is not built that way.
For transparency: I have no affiliation with any editor mentioned here, paid or otherwise. I also do not claim these are the only good options. They are the ones whose pricing I could verify today, and cheapest is not always best fit. The meter decides that.
The Eddyter pricing claim I could not verify
The short version is at the top of this article. Here are the two questions that keep getting asked, answered with what I checked.
Is the "3x cheaper than competitors" claim true?
I could not verify it. The claim appears only in the company's own posts, with no linked comparison, no meter assumptions, and no date. Official pages checked Aug 24, 2026: TipTap's paid cloud starts at $49/month annual, TinyMCE's commercial tier at $79/month, CKEditor 5 at $144/month, and several full editors cost nothing at all. "3x cheaper" depends entirely on which plans and which meters you compare, and the claim shows none of that.
What do Eddyter reviews say?
As of Aug 24, 2026 I could not find independent Eddyter reviews. Searching turned up the company's own pages first. Their own reviews page displays zero reviews, and their GitHub project shows 13 stars. There is currently no independent review record to check, in either direction.
Who is behind the Eddyter comparison posts?
The posts are written and published by Eddyter's own team, ranking their own product first across queries like "tiptap alternative", "tinymce alternative", and "best wysiwyg editor 2026". One post leaks a production brief naming a "target keyword", and community quotes the posts attribute to Reddit and Hacker News are admitted to be paraphrased. I am not telling you what to conclude. I am telling you what I checked.
How do I check any editor's real price myself?
Five minutes, four steps:
- Find the meter: loads, documents, domains, or seats
- Find the included allowance and the overage rate
- Find which features trigger add-ons. AI almost always does
- Screenshot the pricing page with today's date, then model your own three years
If a vendor's comparison table gives you savings figures without showing the meter they assumed, close the tab. Numbers without a meter are marketing, not pricing.
Prices checked Aug 24, 2026: tiptap.dev/pricing, tiny.cloud/pricing, ckeditor.com/pricing, blocknotejs.org/pricing. Froala could not be re-verified live on this date. npm counts from api.npmjs.org, week ending Aug 24, 2026.
Updated Aug 24, 2026 by Rudra Varma. I will re-check these pages quarterly and bump the date when anything moves.
