90% of the world's green tea comes from China — and the democratic alternatives are better than you think
Green tea is the world's second most consumed beverage after water. And 90% of global green tea production comes from China (EIU 2.12). This is not incidental: it means that most green tea sold in Europe — in supermarket bags, in speciality shops, and in premium tea chains — originates in the country with one of the lowest democratic scores on the EIU index.
The problem is not only political. Tea plantations in China use pesticides that are banned in Europe. Greenpeace published in 2022 an analysis of 18 samples of Chinese tea on the European market: 75% contained residues of at least one pesticide, and 15% exceeded the Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) set by the EU.
However, first-rate democratic alternatives exist. Japan (8.40), Taiwan (8.99), and Darjeeling in India (7.18) produce some of the world's finest green and white teas, with radically superior production standards. This guide helps you find them.
The problem: Chinese pesticides, unreliable certifications, and misleading labelling
China (2.12) uses on its tea plantations pesticides including chlorpyrifos, bifenthrin, and acetamiprid — substances with severe restrictions or bans in the EU. The regulatory asymmetry creates a gap: tea produced in China can be sold in Europe if it does not exceed European MRLs, but European MRLs are more permissive for tea than for other foods because tea is infused, not eaten directly.
The labelling problem: a tea sold as "Sencha," "Gyokuro," or "Dragon Well" in Europe can be Chinese even if the names are Japanese or evoke a generic oriental origin. European regulations only require country of origin labelling when the tea is single-origin — blends can omit it.
Organic certifications also have problems: "Organic" or "Bio" labels on Chinese teas are managed by Chinese certification bodies (such as Organic Food Development Center, OFDC) that do not have the same rigour as European certifications (Demeter, ECOCERT). European Commission investigations in 2021 found irregularities in 30% of Chinese organic food imports.
Taiwan (8.99) has phytosanitary regulation equivalent to Europe's. Its pesticide residue controls for tea are stricter than European ones. Taiwan's Council of Agriculture directly certifies tea farms.
The democratic countries producing quality green and white tea
Japan (8.40) — Japan is the world reference for quality green tea. Varieties such as Gyokuro, Matcha, Sencha, Genmaicha, and Hojicha are produced in prefectures including Shizuoka, Uji (Kyoto), and Kagoshima. Japanese phytosanitary regulation is strict. Premium Japanese tea farms hold JAS (Japanese Agricultural Standard) certifications with rigorous controls.
Taiwan (8.99) — The island produces some of the world's most prized oolongs and green teas: High Mountain Oolong, Alishan, Li Shan, Jin Xuan. Its EIU score of 8.99 makes it one of the most democratic tea-producing countries in the world. Taiwan's high-mountain plantations produce single-harvest teas with full traceability.
India (7.18) — Darjeeling (West Bengal), Assam, and Nilgiri produce black tea and specific green/white teas. India clears the democratic threshold. Darjeeling tea holds a Protected Geographical Indication recognised by the EU. Top Darjeeling estates (Makaibari, Castleton, Margaret's Hope) hold international organic certifications and publish their agricultural practices.
Sri Lanka (6.79) — Better known for black tea (Ceylon), Sri Lanka slightly clears the democratic threshold and produces some high-quality white and green teas. Its EIU score (6.79) is borderline — Democratic Market includes it with specific chain verification.
What to look for when buying green tea with democratic origin
— Declared country of origin: explicitly look for "Japan," "Taiwan," or "India - Darjeeling." Not "Asian green tea" or unspecified blends.
— Specific farm or region: the best teas indicate not just the country but the prefecture (Uji, Shizuoka) or farm (Makaibari Estate).
— Phytosanitary certification: JAS (Japan), Council of Agriculture certification (Taiwan), or internationally recognised certifications.
— First harvest (Ichibancha in Japan, First Flush in Darjeeling): indicates maximum quality and normally greater attention to cultivation.
— Single harvest, single estate: indicates full traceability.

Tea is perhaps the product where the democratic alternative is most clearly superior in every sense. Green tea from a Uji farm (Japan, 8.40) or a Taiwanese high-mountain oolong (Taiwan, 8.99) is better in taste, safer in pesticides, and has more transparent supply chains than any supermarket Chinese green tea bag.
There is no sacrifice in this case. You just need to pay a fair price for something that is worth more — and that comes from where it says it does.
