What is Ramp?
Ramp is a US-based corporate spend management platform that combines company cards, expense automation, and accounts payable tools in a single product. Founded in 2019, it targets businesses with 10 to 500 employees that want to replace manual expense reports with card-based controls and AI-assisted automation. The core idea is simple: issue unlimited physical and virtual cards, set spend limits at the card level, and let the software handle receipt matching, expense coding, and GL sync automatically.
Where Ramp differs from traditional expense tools is its emphasis on AI-driven spend intelligence — flagging duplicate subscriptions, surfacing savings opportunities, and categorizing transactions without manual input. Finance teams at fast-growing companies use it as both an operational tool and a real-time visibility layer over company spending.
Key Features
- Unlimited cards with granular controls — Issue virtual or physical cards per employee, vendor, or project, with merchant category restrictions, spend limits, and auto-expiring single-use cards for one-off purchases.
- AI-powered receipt matching and expense coding — Ramp automatically matches receipts to transactions and suggests GL codes based on historical patterns, reducing manual data entry for both employees and finance teams.
- Real-time spend visibility — All card transactions appear on a central dashboard the moment they occur, replacing month-end reconciliation with continuous oversight.
- Deep accounting integrations — Two-way sync with QuickBooks Online and NetSuite is a standout strength, praised by fractional CFO teams that close books across multiple clients. Xero and Sage integrations are also available.
- Accounts payable and bill pay — Beyond cards, Ramp handles vendor bill capture, approval routing, and ACH or check payment, consolidating card and AP spend in one platform.
- Cashback rewards — The free plan includes 1.5% cashback on purchases, credited automatically.
- Spend intelligence alerts — Ramp proactively surfaces duplicate SaaS subscriptions, unused software, and vendor contract renewal windows — a differentiator not typically found in card-only competitors.
Pricing
Ramp's core plan is genuinely free: $0 per user per month, with no cap on cards or users and no hidden platform fee on the starter tier.
Critical requirement: Ramp requires a minimum of $25,000 in a US business bank account to qualify. This is a hard eligibility threshold. It exists because Ramp issues a charge card — balances must be paid in full each billing cycle — not a revolving credit line. If your business cannot meet this threshold, you will not be approved regardless of revenue or credit history.
Ramp also offers paid premium tiers with additional automation, policy controls, and priority support. Current pricing for those tiers should be confirmed directly at ramp.com, as it may change. For most SMBs, the free tier covers the core use case well.
There are no foreign transaction fees on the card. Ramp is currently only available to US-registered businesses.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Genuinely free to start — $0/user with no platform fee
- Unlimited physical and virtual cards on every plan
- Best-in-class QuickBooks Online and NetSuite sync, validated by accounting professionals
- AI-automated expense categorization cuts manual reconciliation time significantly
- Real-time spend visibility replaces end-of-month surprises
- 1.5% cashback on all purchases
- Spend intelligence features (duplicate subscriptions, savings alerts) not standard in competing platforms
- No foreign transaction fees
Cons
- $25,000 minimum bank balance required — a hard barrier for early-stage startups and very small businesses
- Charge card only — full balance due each billing cycle, no option to carry a balance
- US businesses only — not available to international or non-US registered companies
- Customer support rated below core product quality in independent testing
- AP automation works well for SMBs but may fall short for enterprise-scale procure-to-pay requirements
- Some users report friction when requesting credit limit increases or disputing transactions
Who Should NOT Use Ramp
- Businesses with less than $25K in the bank — The eligibility threshold is non-negotiable; you will not qualify.
- Companies that need revolving credit — Ramp is a charge card. If your cash flow requires carrying a monthly balance, look at Brex for VC-backed startups or a traditional business credit card.
- International teams — Ramp is US-only. Non-US businesses should evaluate Payhawk, Spendesk, or Airbase depending on their region.
- Reimbursement-first workflows — If most expense volume comes from employees submitting personal card charges for reimbursement rather than using company cards, Expensify or SAP Concur may be a better fit.
- Enterprises needing full procure-to-pay — Ramp's AP module is solid for SMBs but is not a dedicated P2P platform for large-scale procurement workflows.
Verdict
Ramp earns a strong recommendation for US businesses with 10 to 500 employees that carry $25,000 or more in their bank account and want to eliminate manual expense reports. The combination of a genuinely free plan, unlimited cards, AI-assisted coding, and deep accounting integrations is difficult to match at this price point. Fractional CFO teams consistently rank its QuickBooks and NetSuite sync among the best in the category.
The charge card structure and US-only availability are real constraints that will immediately disqualify some buyers. But for the right company — a profitable SMB, a scaling startup with runway, or a mid-market team stuck on paper-based expense reports — Ramp is one of the most operationally efficient spend management platforms available in 2026.
Overall rating: 8.0/10. Excellent for its target market; verify the $25K bank minimum before applying.
FAQ
Is Ramp actually free?

Does Ramp work outside the US?
No. Ramp is currently available only to US-registered businesses. International teams should evaluate alternatives such as Payhawk, Airbase, or Spendesk.
