Streaming to Twitch or YouTube while gaming asks a lot of your system. Here's how to configure Windows to minimize the performance hit.
The encoder choice
NVENC (NVIDIA) / AMF (AMD): hardware encoders that use dedicated silicon on your GPU. Minimal CPU cost — the encoder runs independently from the game. Best option for maintaining FPS while streaming.
x264 (CPU encoding): high-quality output but significant CPU overhead. Only viable if you have 8+ cores and can spare 2-4 for encoding.
Use hardware encoding. The quality difference at typical streaming bitrates (4000-8000 kbps) is negligible compared to the FPS benefit.
OBS process priority
OBS should run at Normal priority (not High). If OBS runs at High, it competes with your game for CPU time during encode handoff.
Set OBS priority in OBS Settings → Advanced → Process Priority → Normal.
Separate audio device for game and stream
If streaming with voice commentary, running game audio and mic through the same device creates audio processing contention. Use separate devices if possible.
Network bandwidth
Streaming at 6000 kbps = 750 KB/s upload constantly. Ensure your upstream doesn't saturate — this would cause packet loss in-game.
CPU core assignment
If using x264, pin OBS to specific cores:
(Get-Process obs64).ProcessorAffinity = 0x03 # cores 0-1 only
This prevents OBS from competing with game threads on cores 2+.
