Leather footwear has one of the most complex supply chains of any consumer product. A shoe has multiple components: the upper (leather), the lining, the sole (leather, rubber, or synthetic), thread, metal hardware, and adhesives. Each can come from a different country. And the most voluminous component — leather — has a global chain with very problematic nodes.
China (EIU 2.12) is the world's largest leather tanner, responsible for 28% of global production. Bangladesh (5.99) — right at the threshold — has a leather tanning industry with serious documented water pollution and labour conditions condemned by Human Rights Watch. India (7.18) clears Democratic Market's threshold, but has leather production zones with documented child labour reported in 2023 investigations.

The problem: leather supply chains are opaque by design
Leather has a long journey. The animal (cow, goat, pig) is born in one country. Raw hides are transported to a tannery. Tanned leather is distributed to a footwear manufacturer in a third country. The finished shoe is sold in a fourth market.
This multi-country chain makes labelling especially misleading. A "Made in Italy" shoe can have leather tanned in China, assembled in Albania, and only finished (final polish pass) in Italy. European regulations allow this.

France (7.99) — French leather (Liger, Dupuy Comtesse) is mainly destined for luxury goods (Hermès, Louis Vuitton). Total traceability, but very high price.
What to look for when buying leather shoes with democratic origin
— Leather Working Group (LWG) Gold or Silver: the most important tannery responsibility certification. Check the manufacturer's website for LWG-certified tanneries.
— "Full Grain Leather" declared with origin: high-quality full-grain leather always has an identified tannery.
— Country of manufacture of the complete shoe: Made in Spain, Made in Italy, Made in Portugal indicate higher probability of European leather.
— Independent brand with published sourcing policy: brands that publish their tannery have more to gain from transparency.
The best options in 2026 with a democratic supply chain

A well-made European leather shoe — Carmina, Crockett & Jones, Paraboot — with proper care lasts 10 to 20 years. Its environmental footprint per year of use is a fraction of that of a synthetic leather shoe or low-cost Chinese leather shoe lasting two seasons.
But beyond durability, there is origin. The leather from Tuscan tanneries in Santa Croce (Italy, 7.67) or Igualada (Spain, 8.13) comes from countries where workers have unions, rivers have legal protection, and auditors can inspect without restrictions.
Democratic Market lists only footwear with verified leather from tanneries in countries with an EIU score above 6.0. Because even the sole of your shoes has geopolitics.
