The short answer people keep landing on Reddit for: the built-in macOS Dock hasn't meaningfully changed in over a decade, and for most things that actually annoy people — a dock that only shows on one monitor, no app folders, minimised windows that don't restore properly — there is no fix inside System Settings. Your real options are Rectangle-style free tools that do almost nothing to the dock itself, or a paid replacement that actually rebuilds it. Here's what each option is honestly good for.
What's actually broken about the macOS Dock?
Before spending anything, it helps to be specific about the problem. macOS's Dock has a handful of well-known frustrations:
- One monitor only. The Dock moves to whichever screen your cursor is near — it never shows simultaneously on all displays. With two or three monitors, you're constantly mousing to the bottom of the wrong screen.
- No app folders. You can drag apps onto a Stack (a folder of files), but you cannot drag one app icon onto another to group them. That's iOS behaviour that Apple has never brought to the Mac.
- Minimised windows behave weirdly. Click a minimised app in the Dock and macOS brings you to the app but not necessarily the window. It's inconsistent enough that people notice.
- Customisation is minimal. One size slider. A magnification toggle. Position (bottom, left, right). That's it.
If only one of these is your problem, you might not need a full replacement.
The free options — what they actually do
DockDoor (free) adds live window previews when you hover over a Dock icon. That's genuinely useful and it's the only thing it does. If your frustration is "I can't see which window is which", DockDoor solves that for nothing. It doesn't touch the Dock's appearance, doesn't add multi-monitor support, and doesn't do folders.
Rectangle / Rectangle Pro (free / $9.99) is a window manager, not a dock replacement. It's frequently mentioned alongside dock discussions on Reddit because people conflate the two. Rectangle snaps windows to halves and thirds of your screen. It does nothing to the Dock itself. Solid tool, wrong category.
Spacers via Terminal — you can add invisible spacer tiles to the Dock using a Terminal command, which helps with visual grouping. It's free and works, but it's fiddly to set up and doesn't survive every macOS update cleanly.
bash
defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="spacer-tile";}'; killall Dock
This creates one spacer. Run it multiple times for more. To remove, just drag the invisible tile off the Dock.
The paid options — honest comparison
uBar (~$30) is the most established paid dock replacement, but it takes a fundamentally different philosophy: it replaces the Dock with a Windows-style taskbar that shows running windows, not pinned apps. If that's what you want — especially if you're switching from Windows — uBar is mature and polished. But if you like the dock metaphor and just want it to work properly, uBar will feel alien.
HyperDock focuses mainly on window previews and some snap features. It's dated, hasn't been updated consistently, and Reddit threads from the last year tend to flag it as unreliable on Sonoma and Sequoia.
ActiveDock is a full dock replacement with multi-monitor support and some customisation. It exists, it works, but it hasn't built the kind of vocal community that signals active development.
Dockish ($6.99 one-time, 7-day free trial, macOS 14+) is what I built because I wanted a dock that fixed the actual pain points without becoming a taskbar. The things it specifically addresses:
- Multi-monitor: Dockish shows a dock on every connected display simultaneously. Each can be mirrored or fully independent with its own pinned apps. When you hot-plug a monitor, it just appears.
- iPhone-style folders: drag one app icon onto another and it creates a folder — 2x2 preview grid, auto-naming, exactly like iOS. This is the feature most people assume must exist on Mac and are surprised to find doesn't.
- Minimised windows: clicking an app icon in Dockish launches it if it's not running, focuses it if it is, and restores it if it's minimised. One click, correct behaviour, every time.
- Customisation: icon size from 24–96px, adjustable spacing and magnification, three themes (glass/dark/light plus custom tint), app name labels, dividers, spacers — all from a proper settings panel rather than Terminal one-liners.
- Window previews on hover: hover over any icon and see live thumbnails of that app's open windows. You can close windows directly from the preview without switching to the app.
- Rich context menus: Chrome, Brave, Edge, Arc, Vivaldi all get profile switching in the right-click menu. Media apps get playback controls. Option-click any app to Force Quit.
Version 1.1 — which shipped based on feedback shortly after launch — added one-click import of your existing macOS Dock's pinned apps (so setup takes about ten seconds), the ability to copy layouts between monitors, and per-mode layout memory so your "All Monitors" setup and "Main Only" setup each remember their own configuration independently.
The one-time price matters: it's $6.99 with no subscription, and that price goes up to $9.99 on 1 September 2026. Existing buyers are unaffected — every future update is free.
Which one should you actually buy?
Here's the honest breakdown:
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| You only want window previews on hover | DockDoor (free) |
| You want a Windows-style taskbar | uBar (~$30) |
| You want the dock to show on every monitor | Dockish ($6.99) |
| You want iPhone-style app folders | Dockish ($6.99) |
| You want proper click-to-restore for minimised windows | Dockish ($6.99) |
| You're happy with the native Dock but want visual grouping | Terminal spacers (free) |
If the macOS Dock mostly works for you and the frustration is purely cosmetic, save the money. But if any of the core behaviours are genuinely broken for your workflow — multiple monitors especially — it's worth trying Dockish free for seven days before deciding.

Common questions
Is there a free Mac dock replacement that actually works?
DockDoor is the best free option, but it only adds window previews to the existing Dock — it doesn't replace it or fix multi-monitor behaviour. For a true dock replacement, there's no free option that's actively maintained in 2026; the paid options start at $6.99.
What's the difference between Dockish and uBar?
uBar replaces the Dock with a Windows-style taskbar showing every open window. Dockish keeps the dock metaphor — pinned apps, folders, launcher behaviour — but fixes the things Apple got wrong, particularly multi-monitor support and app folders. Which you prefer comes down to whether you want a dock or a taskbar.
Does a Mac dock replacement slow down your Mac?
Any dock replacement runs as a background process, so there's some overhead, but in practice it's negligible on any Mac running macOS 14 or later. Dockish is a menu bar app that uses native macOS APIs — it doesn't inject into the system Dock or use any kernel extensions.
