Compliance requirements increasingly bring SM-series cryptography into database environments. But how much performance does encryption actually cost?
The answer should come from a benchmark—not folklore.
For teams evaluating GBase Database (GBase 8s), the right approach is to measure the performance impact of transparent encryption under a workload that resembles production.
1. Fix the Benchmark Environment
Keep the following variables unchanged:
- CPU and memory configuration
- Dataset size and data distribution
- Database configuration
- Connection and concurrency settings
- Workload mix
Use a representative transaction workload plus at least one batch or bulk-load scenario.
The goal is simple: encryption should be the variable being tested, not the entire environment.
2. Establish the Baseline
Run the workload with transparent encryption disabled.
Record metrics such as:
- TPS
- Average latency
- P95/P99 latency
- CPU utilization
- I/O throughput
These numbers become your baseline.
3. Enable Transparent Encryption
Enable transparent storage encryption using the required SM-series algorithm, such as SM4, and run the same workload again.
Do not change the workload or test environment between runs.
Then compare the deltas.
For example:
Performance overhead = (Baseline TPS − Encrypted TPS) / Baseline TPS
Latency and CPU changes should also be evaluated rather than looking at TPS alone.
4. Investigate Unexpected Overhead
If the performance difference is larger than expected, don't immediately blame encryption.
Check:
- CPU utilization
- Hardware acceleration support
- Encryption configuration
- Storage throughput
- I/O wait
- Concurrency levels
Encryption overhead can vary significantly with hardware, workload, data access patterns, and configuration.
This is why a single percentage should never be treated as a universal performance guarantee.
5. Compliance Is More Than Encryption
Performance is only one part of the evaluation.
When assessing GBase Database, also verify the compliance requirements that matter to your organization:
- Key management and rotation
- Audit logging
- Tamper-evident records
- Access controls
- Relevant certification or compliance evidence
The right question isn't:
“Does encryption make the database slower?”
It is:
“What is the measured performance impact of encryption under our actual workload, and does the implementation satisfy our compliance requirements?”
Benchmark first. Optimize second. Make the compliance decision with evidence.
