What started as a simple idea inside a student-led tech community turned into something much bigger than we expected.
Our first national hackathon crossed 4,600+ registrations.
And honestly, getting there was not just about building a registration page or announcing an event. It was about taking an idea, building a team around it, finding the right partners, and actually executing.
This is the story of how we did it.
It Started With an Idea
Every event starts somewhere.
For me, the idea was simple:
What if we created a hackathon where students could build real projects, collaborate with other developers, and get an opportunity to showcase what they can create?
At the time, Omnikon was still growing as a student-led technology community.
We didn't have a massive team or years of experience organizing national-level events.
We just had the willingness to try.
So I decided to turn the idea into an actual hackathon.
From Idea to Execution
An idea is easy.
Execution is where things get difficult.
Once the decision was made, the Omnikon team started working on everything required to make the hackathon possible.
That included:
- Designing the hackathon website
- Setting up the registration flow
- Creating problem statements
- Planning the submission process
- Preparing announcements and social media campaigns
- Managing the community
- Coordinating with partners
- Handling participant communication
- Building a system for evaluating submissions
As the founder, my role was primarily to drive the vision and direction.
But the idea wouldn't have gone anywhere without the people who actually implemented it.
I had the idea. The Omnikon team turned that idea into something real.
That distinction is important.
A founder doesn't build everything alone.
A strong team takes a vision and makes it executable.
Finding the Right Partners
One of the biggest milestones for the hackathon was getting support from established platforms.
We were fortunate to have support from Unstop and Upstox through Uplearn.
For a student-led organization hosting its first national hackathon, having organizations like these associated with the event gave us additional credibility and helped us reach a much larger audience.
It also showed us something important:
You don't necessarily need to start with a huge organization behind you.
Sometimes you need to build something worth supporting first.
Then the Registrations Started
When registrations opened, we didn't know what would happen.
Would people actually register?
Would students trust a relatively new community to organize a national hackathon?
Would our outreach work?
Initially, we were simply hoping to get a few hundred participants.
Then the numbers started moving.
Hundreds.
Then thousands.
And eventually...
4,600+ registrations.
For our first hackathon, that number was far beyond what we initially expected.
But the number itself isn't the most important part.
What mattered was what that number represented.
Thousands of students were willing to give an opportunity to something that had started as an idea.
What 4,600+ Registrations Taught Us
1. You don't need to wait until you're "big"
One of the easiest excuses when starting something is:
"We're too small."
We could have waited until Omnikon had a larger community, more experience, or more resources.
Instead, we decided to build.
The result proved that being small doesn't automatically mean being incapable.
2. Distribution matters
Building an event is only half the job.
People need to know it exists.
We spent a significant amount of time working on announcements, social media, community communication, partnerships, and outreach.
A good event with poor distribution will struggle.
A good event with strong distribution can reach thousands.
3. A team matters more than an idea
This was probably my biggest takeaway.
The original idea was mine.
But ideas don't deploy themselves.
The Omnikon team worked on the website, communication, operations, design, outreach, and everything else required to actually run the event.
That's why I don't look at the 4,600+ registrations as an individual achievement.
It's an Omnikon achievement.
What Happened Behind the Scenes
From the outside, a hackathon announcement looks simple.
You see:
"Registrations are open."
What you don't see is everything happening behind that post.
There were discussions about the website.
Questions about the registration process.
Changes to timelines.
Sponsor coordination.
Design revisions.
Community announcements.
Participant questions.
Technical issues.
Last-minute decisions.
And a lot of messages.
Organizing an event teaches you quickly that planning is important, but adaptability is just as important.
Things will change.
Something will break.
Someone will have a question you didn't anticipate.
You have to keep moving.
Building More Than a Hackathon
For us, this wasn't only about conducting one event.
It was also about proving what Omnikon could become.
We want Omnikon to be a place where students can:
- Build open-source projects
- Learn from each other
- Participate in technical events
- Collaborate with developers
- Contribute to real projects
- Create things that actually ship
The hackathon was one step toward that larger goal.
And seeing thousands of registrations made that vision feel much more real.
The Numbers
A few numbers that we'll remember from our first hackathon:

But there's another number that matters to us:
1 idea.
Because everything started there.
What Comes Next?
This hackathon is not the finish line.
It's a starting point.
There are still plenty of things we want to improve.
Better event infrastructure.
Better participant experience.
More technical workshops.
More open-source initiatives.
More collaborations.
More opportunities for students to build.
Our first hackathon showed us that people are willing to participate.
Now the challenge is to build experiences that are actually worth participating in.
Final Thoughts
If you're a student thinking about starting something, here's what I'd tell you:
Don't wait until you have everything figured out.
You probably won't.
Start with the idea.
Find people who believe in it.
Build the first version.
Talk to people.
Learn from what goes wrong.
Then improve it.
Our first national hackathon started as an idea.
The Omnikon team implemented it.
And 4,600+ students eventually became part of it.
