How to Free Up Disk Space on Windows Without Deleting Important Files

You open File Explorer.

You see a red bar on your C: drive.

You hover over it:

"15.2 GB free of 237 GB."

Your PC is running slow. Apps take forever to open. Windows is warning you about low disk space.

You think:

"What can I delete? What's safe to remove? What if I delete something important?"

You're not alone.

This is one of the most common Windows problems — and one of the most stressful.

The good news?

You can free up gigabytes of space without deleting anything important.

This guide walks you through 10 safe methods to clean your C: drive — from built-in Windows tools to advanced tricks.

Let's go.

1. Run Disk Cleanup (Including System Files)

Disk Cleanup is Windows' built-in disk-cleaning tool. It's safe, effective, and often recovers several gigabytes.

How to run it:

1. Press Win + R, type cleanmgr.exe, and press Enter
2. Select your C: drive and click OK
3. Click Clean up system files (this is where the real space is)
4. Select C: again and wait for the scan
5. Check these boxes:
   • Windows Update Cleanup (often GBs)
   • Temporary files
   • Recycle Bin
   • Delivery Optimization Files
   • Previous Windows installations
   • Temporary Windows installation files
   • Thumbnails
6. Click OK → Delete Files

What you gain: Often 5–20 GB or more, especially if you've never run it before.

2. Turn On Storage Sense (Automatic Cleanup)

Storage Sense automatically deletes temporary files, clears the Recycle Bin, and removes old Downloads folder items on a schedule.

How to enable it:

1. Open Settings → System → Storage
2. Turn Storage Sense to On
3. Click Storage Sense to configure:
   • Run it daily, weekly, or monthly
   • Delete files in Recycle Bin after 30 days (or sooner)
   • Delete files in Downloads after 30 days (if you want)

Pro tip: Storage Sense runs in the background — set it and forget it.

3. Use Cleanup Recommendations

Windows 11 also provides a Cleanup recommendations section that shows you exactly what's taking up space.

How to use it:

1. Settings → System → Storage
2. Click Cleanup recommendations
3. Review categories:
   • Temporary files
   • Large or unused files
   • Files synced to the cloud
   • Unused apps
4. Select items to remove and click Clean up for each section

What's nice: It shows you the size of each item before you delete it.

4. Delete Temporary Files Manually

Windows stores temporary files in several locations. Many of these files can be safely removed, although some may still be in use.

Locations to clean:

1. Press Win + R, type %temp%, press Enter → select files you no longer need and delete them
2. Press Win + R, type temp, press Enter → select files you no longer need and delete them

Note: Windows may refuse to delete files that are currently in use. Simply skip those files and continue.

What you gain: Usually 1–5 GB, depending on your usage.

About Prefetch: I generally don't recommend clearing the Prefetch folder (C:\Windows\Prefetch). It stores data that helps apps launch faster, and clearing it usually frees very little space while potentially slowing down app launches temporarily.

5. Remove Old Windows Update Files

Windows keeps old update files so you can uninstall updates if needed. These are safe to remove if your system is stable.

How to remove them:

• Via Disk Cleanup: Run cleanmgr.exe → Clean up system files → check Windows Update Cleanup
• Via Storage Settings: Settings → System → Storage → Temporary files → check Windows Update Cleanup → Remove files

Important: In some Windows 11 versions (25H2+), Windows Update Cleanup may not appear in the list. If you don't see it, use Disk Cleanup as Administrator instead.

What you gain: Often 3–10 GB.

6. Uninstall Unused Apps

You've probably installed apps you never use. They take up space.

How to check:

1. Settings → Apps → Installed apps
2. Sort by Size (largest first)
3. Review apps you don't use
4. Click Uninstall for each

What to look for:

• Games you no longer play
• Old Adobe apps
• Trial software
• Bloatware that came with your PC

What you gain: Varies — some games are 50+ GB.

7. Move Personal Files to Another Drive

Your Documents, Pictures, Music, and Videos folders often contain large files that don't need to be on C:.

How to move them:

1. Settings → System → Storage → Advanced storage settings
2. Click Where new content is saved
3. Change each category (Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos) to another drive

Alternatively: Manually move large folders to an external drive or a second internal drive.

What you gain: Varies — could be tens of gigabytes.

8. Use a Disk Space Analyzer (Find Large Files)

Sometimes the biggest space hogs are hidden in folders you never think to check.

Disk space analyzers scan your drive and show you exactly where space is being used.

How to use:

1. Download and run as Administrator
2. Select your C: drive
3. Wait for the scan (seconds with WizTree, minutes with WinDirStat)
4. Look for large files or folders you can delete or move

Pro tip: WizTree is the fastest — it scans a 1TB drive in seconds.

9. Disable Hibernation (If You Don't Use It)

The hibernation file (hiberfil.sys) can be several gigabytes — roughly the size of your RAM.

If you never use Hibernate (you use Sleep or Shutdown instead), you can safely disable it and reclaim that space.

How to disable hibernation:

1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
2. Run: powercfg /h off
3. Windows removes the hibernation file when you disable hibernation.

Note: This disables Hibernate and Fast Startup. Sleep and normal shutdown still work.

What you gain: 1–32 GB, depending on your RAM size.

10. Enable OneDrive Files On-Demand

If you use OneDrive, Files On-Demand keeps only placeholders on your local drive. Full files are downloaded only when you open them.

How to enable:

1. Right-click OneDrive icon in system tray
2. Select Settings → Sync and backup
3. Under Files On-Demand, make sure it's enabled

What you gain: Varies — can free up gigabytes if you have large cloud files.

What NOT to Delete (Safety First)

Golden rule: If you're unsure, don't delete it. Use the built-in tools instead.
