What Causes Bile Duct Blockage?
The bile ducts can become blocked for several reasons, including:

When bile can't flow normally into the intestine, it backs up into the bloodstream, causing jaundice and, if untreated, can lead to infection (cholangitis) or liver damage.

How Biliary Drainage Works
Biliary drainage is performed using image-guided techniques to bypass or relieve the blockage. There are two main approaches:
Percutaneous Transhepatic Biliary Drainage (PTBD): A needle is passed through the skin and liver directly into the blocked bile duct under imaging guidance. A catheter is then placed to drain bile externally or, when possible, internally into the intestine, relieving pressure and allowing jaundice to resolve.
Stent Placement: In many cases, once access is achieved, a stent can be placed across the blockage to allow bile to flow through it directly, sometimes eliminating the need for an external drainage bag.
Why This Approach Matters
Blocked bile ducts, especially when caused by tumors, can sometimes prevent patients from being fit for surgery or other treatments like chemotherapy until jaundice is controlled. Biliary drainage often serves as an essential first step — stabilizing the patient's liver function and relieving symptoms before further treatment can proceed.
In cases where the blockage isn't caused by cancer, drainage may relieve symptoms while the underlying cause (such as gallstones or a stricture) is addressed separately.
What to Expect
The procedure is done under imaging guidance, typically ultrasound and fluoroscopy, with the patient sedated and comfortable. Recovery time varies depending on the complexity of the blockage and the patient's overall health, but many patients notice improvement in jaundice symptoms within days as bile flow is restored.
