macOS has never let you drag one Dock icon onto another to create a folder — that gesture does nothing, or at best rearranges the icon. The only way to get iPhone-style app grouping in the Mac Dock is with a third-party dock replacement. Dockish ($6.99 one-time, macOS 14+) brings exactly that: drag one app icon onto another and a folder appears with a 2×2 preview grid, the same interaction you already know from iOS.
Why macOS can't do this natively
Apple's Dock has had the same fundamental design since Mac OS X 10.0 — a flat list of aliases arranged on a shelf. The Dock supports stacks (a folder from your filesystem displayed as a fan or grid), but that's different: a stack is a shortcut to an existing folder on disk, not a grouping of app shortcuts. Dragging one app icon onto another in the native Dock just reorders them.
iOS folders work because the Home Screen model was designed from the start to support grouping. The Mac Dock model wasn't. Apple has shown no sign of backporting iOS folder behaviour to macOS — even the redesigned Dock in macOS Sequoia didn't add it.
So if you want folders in your Dock, you need a replacement.
What "iPhone-style" actually means in practice
The phrase gets used loosely, so it's worth being specific. iPhone-style folder behaviour means:
- Drag one app onto another to create the folder — no menu, no separate dialog
- A 2×2 grid preview shows the first four app icons inside the folder
- The folder gets a name automatically based on the app category (you can rename it)
- Clicking the folder opens it so you can launch any app inside
- Dragging an app out of the folder removes it from the group
That's exactly how Dockish implements it. There's no separate "manage folders" screen — you work directly in the dock the same way you would on your iPhone.
How to create a folder in Dockish
Once Dockish is installed and running:
- Add the apps you want to group to your Dockish dock (drag them in from Finder or Applications, or use the one-click import to pull in your existing macOS Dock layout)
- Drag one app icon slowly onto another — you'll see the target icon highlight
- Release — the two apps collapse into a folder with a 2×2 grid preview
- Click the folder name to rename it (optional — the auto-name is usually fine)
- Keep dragging more apps in by dropping them onto the folder icon
To remove an app from a folder, open the folder by clicking it, then drag the app icon out onto the dock.
Why this is better than the stack workaround
The common native workaround is to create an actual folder in Finder, put aliases of your apps inside it, and drag that folder to the Dock's right-hand side. This gives you a stack — a grid or fan of apps you can launch. It works, but it has real friction:
- You have to manage the folder in Finder separately from the Dock
- Adding or removing apps means going to Finder, not just dragging in the Dock
- Stacks can only live in the right section of the Dock (after the divider line)
- The visual presentation is a stack animation, not a folder with a preview grid
- Each stack is a folder on disk, so you end up with a bunch of alias folders cluttering your home directory or Applications folder
Dockish folders live entirely in the dock. There's no Finder folder involved. You manage everything by dragging icons directly.
What the folder looks like on screen
The folder icon shows a 2×2 grid of the first four app icons inside it, similar to how iOS and iPadOS display folder previews. If you have fewer than four apps in the folder, the grid adjusts. The folder sits in your dock at the same size as your other icons — it scales with whatever icon size you've set (24–96px in Dockish).
When you click the folder, it opens an overlay showing all the apps inside. You can launch any of them with a single click. The overlay dismisses when you click elsewhere or press Escape.
Organising a cluttered dock with folders
Folders make the most difference when your dock has grown past 20 icons and you can no longer find anything quickly. A practical grouping that works for most people:
- Work — Slack, Zoom, Mail, Calendar
- Dev — VS Code, Terminal, Simulator, Proxyman
- Creative — Figma, Affinity Designer, Screenflow
- Browsers — Safari, Chrome, Firefox
- Utilities — Soundish, Lockish, CleanMyMac, iStat Menus
Five folders instead of 25 individual icons. You still launch any app in two clicks, but the dock is no longer a wall of icons you have to scan.
Dockish also supports dividers and spacers if you prefer to keep apps ungrouped but separated visually — some people prefer groups with breathing room over folders. Both approaches work; it depends on how many apps you're managing.
Does this work on every monitor?
Yes. Dockish can show a dock on every connected display simultaneously — mirrored (same dock on all screens) or independent (different apps on each monitor's dock). Folders work the same way regardless of which dock you're using. If you dock and undock your MacBook regularly, Dockish detects the monitor configuration change and adjusts automatically.
This is one of the bigger practical differences from the native Dock: macOS will never show the same Dock on all your monitors at once. It moves the Dock to whichever screen your cursor is near. With a three-monitor setup, that means a lot of mouse travel to get to the Dock on the "wrong" screen.
Pricing and requirements
Dockish is $6.99 as a one-time purchase, with a 7-day free trial — no credit card needed to try it. It requires macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later. There's no subscription; you pay once and get all future updates.
You can try the folder feature during the trial without committing to anything. The trial is the full app, not a feature-limited version.
Common questions
Can I create folders in the native macOS Dock without any third-party app?
Not in the iPhone sense. macOS supports "stacks" — folders from your filesystem displayed as a fan or grid — but these can only go in the right section of the Dock and require managing alias folders in Finder. You can't drag one app icon onto another in the native Dock to group them.
Does Dockish replace the macOS Dock completely, or does it run alongside it?
Dockish runs alongside the native Dock by default, but it includes a one-click "Hide macOS Dock" option that fully hides the system Dock so only Dockish is visible. This is reversible at any time — your original macOS Dock comes back exactly as it was.
Can I import my existing macOS Dock apps into Dockish automatically?
Yes. Dockish 1.1 added one-click import of your macOS Dock's pinned apps, and this runs automatically on new installs. Your existing Dock layout appears in Dockish immediately without having to drag apps in one by one.
