Getting ghosted by a freelance developer mid-project is more common than most business owners expect — and it doesn't have to mean starting over.

Signs it's actually ghosting, not just a busy week

No response across email, WhatsApp, and phone for over a week. Repeated missed deadlines with no explanation. Vague "almost done" updates with nothing to show. If two or more of these apply, it's time to act.

Check who actually owns your domain — log into the registrar directly, not through the developer's account

Recovering access

The hardest recovery scenario is when a developer registered your domain or hosting under their own account. Registrar support can often reverse this with proof of payment, but it can take one to three weeks. If there's no access at all, a rescue developer can sometimes pull a partial copy from cached pages or the Wayback Machine — but functionality like forms or a database is rarely recoverable that way.
