The honest answer to whether you need a paid Mac dock replacement depends on what's actually frustrating you. If you only want window previews when hovering over dock icons, DockDoor is free and does exactly that. If you want a full dock replacement — folders, multi-monitor docks, real customisation, themes — you're looking at paid options, and the most affordable right now is Dockish at $6.99 one-time.
What the free options actually give you
There are two genuinely free tools worth knowing about, and neither is a full dock replacement.
DockDoor adds live window previews when you hover over dock icons. That's its entire feature set — and it does it well. If your only complaint about the stock dock is that you can't see which Chrome window is which before clicking, DockDoor solves it for free. It doesn't touch anything else: no folders, no multi-monitor docks, no customisation.
Rectangle is the other free app that sometimes gets lumped in here, but it's a window manager, not a dock replacement. It snaps windows to halves and corners with keyboard shortcuts. Worth installing regardless, but it doesn't replace the dock at all.
The macOS dock itself has exactly one customisation slider (icon size) and a handful of toggles in System Settings → Desktop & Dock. There's no native way to group apps into folders, no way to show the dock on every monitor simultaneously, and no way to change the visual style. If any of those things bother you, free tools won't help.
What paid dock replacements actually add
There are four paid options that come up consistently.
Dockish — $6.99 one-time
Launched in July 2026. Replaces the macOS dock with one that works the way you'd expect: drag one app icon onto another and you get an iPhone-style folder with a 2×2 preview grid and auto-naming. The dock shows on every monitor simultaneously — mirrored or independent per display, with hot-plug support so it handles new monitors automatically. Icon size goes from 24–96px, spacing and magnification are adjustable, and there are four visual themes (glass, dark, light, custom tint). Clicking a minimised app actually brings it back (the macOS dock notoriously fails at this). Context menus work properly for Chrome, Brave, Edge, Arc, Vivaldi, and terminals like iTerm2 and Ghostty. There's a 7-day free trial, no subscription.
uBar — ~$30
Mature, stable, and takes a completely different philosophical approach: it replaces the dock with a Windows-style taskbar that shows all open windows as individual items. If you want taskbar behaviour specifically, uBar is the right tool. If you want something that still feels like a Mac dock, it's not the right fit — the two apps aren't really competing.
HyperDock — dated
Adds window previews and some extras. The UI is showing its age and it hasn't kept pace with recent macOS versions. Hard to recommend when DockDoor does the preview part for free.
ActiveDock — ~$15
Offers some dock customisation and multi-monitor support. Less polished than the alternatives; smaller update cadence.
The multi-monitor question specifically
This is the single most common reason people go looking for a dock replacement. macOS will never show the dock on two monitors at the same time — it floats to whichever screen your cursor last visited, which means a constant trek across monitors to launch apps from the screen you're not already using.
The only solutions are third-party. Dockish handles this by running an independent dock on each connected display. You can mirror the same set of apps across all monitors, or configure each dock independently — so your main display might have your full app lineup while your secondary has just the tools you use on that screen. When you unplug a monitor, the dock disappears from it cleanly; plug it back in and it returns.
This is the scenario most buyers are actually solving, and it's why the multi-monitor angle matters more than themes or folder support for many people.
The folder question specifically
macOS has never let you drag one dock icon onto another to create a group. That gesture does nothing. If you have 25+ apps pinned and the dock is a scrolling mess, there's no built-in answer.
Dockish adds the gesture directly: drag any icon onto another and a folder is created with a 2×2 grid preview and an auto-generated name. You can rename it. Open it and the apps are displayed in a grid you can tap directly. It works the same way iOS has worked for years — which makes sense, because that's the interaction model most Mac users already know from their phone.
How to try before buying
Both Dockish and uBar offer trials. Dockish's trial is 7 days and requires no account — download, install, and the trial starts. If you decide to buy, it's a one-time payment through Lemon Squeezy (no subscription, lifetime updates).
DockDoor is free with no trial concept — just install it.
To actually compare them properly during a trial: set up your monitor configuration, pin the apps you use daily, and use the dock exclusively for 2–3 days. The friction points become obvious quickly. The multi-monitor behaviour is the thing most people notice immediately; folder organisation becomes relevant once the monitor problem is solved.
Common questions
Is there a completely free full dock replacement for Mac?
No. DockDoor is free but only adds window previews — it doesn't replace the dock itself. The full dock replacements that add multi-monitor support, folders, and real customisation all cost money. Dockish is the cheapest full replacement at $6.99 one-time, and has a 7-day free trial so you can verify it does what you need before paying.
Will a dock replacement break when macOS updates?
It depends on the app and how it's built. Apps that use Accessibility permissions and standard macOS APIs tend to survive updates better than those using private frameworks. Dockish uses macOS 14+ (Sonoma/Sequoia) APIs and has been kept current since launch. That said, any dock replacement may need an update after a major macOS release — it's a category where you want an actively maintained app, not an abandoned one.
Does replacing the dock slow down my Mac?
A well-built dock replacement adds negligible overhead — it's mostly drawing UI elements and responding to clicks. Dockish runs as a menu bar app with a lightweight footprint. The live window preview feature (hover to see window contents) does a small amount of extra work, but nothing that would be noticeable on any Mac running macOS 14.
