macOS has never let you drag one Dock icon onto another to create a folder — that gesture creates folders on iPhone and iPad, but on Mac it does nothing. If your Dock is getting crowded and you want to group apps the way iOS does, you need either a third-party dock replacement or a workaround using macOS Stacks (which groups files, not apps). Here's exactly what each approach gives you and how to set it up.
Why macOS doesn't have app folders in the Dock
The Mac Dock predates iOS by years, and Apple has never backported the folder metaphor to it. On iPhone, dragging one app icon onto another triggers the folder-creation animation because the Springboard launcher is designed around that interaction. The macOS Dock uses a different model: it's a persistent launcher that shows a mix of pinned apps, running apps, and minimised windows, and Apple has added almost nothing to it since Leopard.
The result is that if you have 25–30 apps pinned to your Dock, your options are limited: remove apps, use invisible spacers to create visual groups, or replace the Dock entirely. Spacers help with organisation but don't reduce the number of icons. For true grouping, you need a replacement.
The native workaround: Stacks and folder aliases (apps only, sort of)
macOS does support dragging a folder into the Dock — it appears as a Stack, fanning out when clicked to show its contents. You can abuse this to create app groups:
- Create a new folder in Finder (e.g.
~/DockGroups/Creative). - Open a second Finder window and go to Applications.
- Hold Option and drag app icons into your new folder — this creates aliases (shortcuts) rather than moving the apps.
- Drag the folder into the right-hand section of your Dock (to the right of the divider line).
This works and it's free, but the experience is clunky. The Stack opens as either a fan or a grid — it doesn't look like a folder, it doesn't show a representative icon preview, and clicking an alias takes you to Finder first if the app isn't already open. It also breaks Auto Stacks (the Dock's built-in Downloads/Documents behaviour) if you're not careful.
The better option: Dockish app folders
Dockish brings proper iPhone-style folders to the Mac Dock. Drag one app icon onto another and they collapse into a folder with a 2×2 preview grid of the apps inside — the same interaction that's been on iOS since 2010. Folders auto-name themselves based on the app category (you can rename them), and you can keep dragging more apps in.
Here's how to create a folder in Dockish:
- Open Dockish (it replaces your Dock as a menu bar app — you can hide the macOS Dock with one click from its settings).
- Drag any pinned app icon directly onto another pinned app icon.
- A folder appears immediately with a 2×2 icon preview.
- Click the folder to open it and see all apps inside. Click any app to launch it.
- To rename the folder, right-click it and choose Rename.
- To remove an app from the folder, open it, then drag the app back out to an empty spot on the Dock.
Folders are particularly useful if you're in a situation I hear about constantly: a Dock with 30+ apps where you genuinely can't find anything quickly. Grouping by context — work apps, creative tools, utilities, browsers — cuts the visual noise without removing anything you might need.
How Dockish folders compare to the Stacks workaround
| Stacks alias workaround | Dockish folders | |
|---|---|---|
| Creation method | Manual alias setup in Finder | Drag one app onto another |
| Visual style | Fan or grid of icons | 2×2 preview grid, folder shape |
| Looks like an app folder | No | Yes |
| Click to open app | Via Finder alias | Direct launch |
| Rename | Rename the folder in Finder | Right-click → Rename |
| Cost | Free | $6.99 one-time |
If you only want a rough grouping and don't mind the clunky alias behaviour, the Stacks workaround is free and gets the job done. If you want the interaction to feel intentional and native, Dockish is the more complete solution.
What else Dockish changes about Dock organisation
Folders are one piece. Dockish also lets you:
- Add dividers and spacers between groups of apps for visual separation — useful even if you don't use folders.
- Adjust icon size anywhere from 24px to 96px, independently of the macOS Dock size slider.
- Set the Dock to appear on every monitor simultaneously rather than jumping between screens — worth mentioning if you're on a multi-monitor setup, because the default macOS behaviour is one of the most complained-about limitations I see.
- Add labels under app icons so you're not guessing which small icon is which.
These all live in the Dockish settings panel, accessible from the menu bar icon.
What to do if Dockish replaces your Dock but you want to keep the macOS one too
Dockish and the macOS Dock can coexist. By default, Dockish offers a one-click "Hide macOS Dock" button in settings — it's fully reversible; it just sets the macOS Dock to auto-hide with a very long delay so it effectively disappears. If you'd rather keep both visible, skip that toggle and both will show. Most people end up hiding the system Dock once Dockish is set up, since having two Docks on screen isn't useful.
Dockish has a 7-day free trial with no credit card required, so it's worth testing the folder behaviour before committing. It's a one-time $6.99 purchase after that — no subscription, and all updates are included.
Common questions
Can I add folders to the macOS Dock without any third-party app?
Not as app folders — the native Dock only supports Stacks, which are folders of files or app aliases. You can set one up by creating a folder of app aliases in Finder and dragging it to the Dock, but it doesn't look or behave like an iPhone-style app folder. It's a workable free workaround but the experience is noticeably rougher.
Does Dockish work on macOS Sequoia?
Yes — Dockish requires macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) or later, so it runs on both Sonoma and Sequoia. macOS Sequoia didn't add any folder support to the built-in Dock, so Dockish fills that gap on both versions.
Can I still access apps that aren't in any folder?
Yes. In Dockish, apps that aren't in a folder sit on the Dock normally alongside any folders you've created. You can mix individual app icons and folders freely, using folders only for the groups that make sense to you — for example, grouping five browsers into one folder while leaving your most-used apps as individual icons.
