Scary Challenges is a free 18+ horror card game with 1,000+ cards across themed decks for sleepovers, groups and solo terror. We built it at Inithouse as a browser-based PWA, and over 10,000 players have used it since launch. Here is what a real sleepover session looks like, and what we learned putting 23+ decks together.
What happens when someone opens the link
There is no download. No account. Someone in the group pulls out their phone, opens scarychallenges.com, and the game is ready. We made this decision early because sleepover groups do not want to pass around a signup form at midnight. The whole point is to keep the barrier at zero.
The first screen shows the deck library. 23+ themed decks sit there: Nightfall, Campfire Tales, Confession Crypt, After Dark, The Abyss, and more. Each deck has a different flavor of horror. Some lean into dares. Some are confessions you would rather not say out loud. Some are atmospheric campfire questions designed to make the room quiet.
For a sleepover group, we usually see people start with something like Campfire Tales or Nightfall. The mild ones. After an hour, someone scrolls down to After Dark or The Abyss.
Three game modes, one session
Every deck supports three game modes: Hot Seat, No Hesitation, and Spin It.
Hot Seat puts one person in the center. The group reads them a card and they have to answer or perform the dare. No Hesitation speeds it up. Cards cycle automatically and you have seconds to respond before the next one drops. Spin It randomizes who gets the card, removing the "who goes next" negotiation entirely.
Groups switch between modes mid-session. A sleepover that starts with relaxed Hot Seat rounds usually shifts to No Hesitation around 1 AM when attention spans get shorter. We did not plan that pattern. We watched it emerge from how people actually used the three modes together.
Solo vs group
Scary Challenges works for groups, but we built a solo mode too. The solo experience strips away the social mechanics and turns the game into a personal dare sequence. Some of the decks hit differently when you are alone at 2 AM reading a card that says "go to the darkest room in your house and stand there for 60 seconds."
The split between group and solo sessions surprised us. We expected maybe 10% solo use. It runs closer to 30%.
Why a PWA with no account
We ship Scary Challenges as a progressive web app. Open the link, play. No app store. No login wall.
The practical reason: our card-game cluster at Inithouse (which also includes Party Challenges and Naughty Challenges) showed us that any friction before the first card kills retention. With Party Challenges, we measured the drop between landing page and first card viewed. Six taps. Every tap we removed moved the number.
Scary Challenges by Inithouse inherited that lesson. You pick a deck, choose a mode, and you are looking at your first card in under 10 seconds.
The PWA architecture also gives us offline capability after the first load. If someone opens the game on Wi-Fi and then loses signal in a cabin or basement, the cards keep working. That matters more than you would think for a game people play in weird locations at weird hours.
Writing 1,000+ horror cards
The card library is the product. We wrote over 1,000 cards across 23+ decks, and the hardest part was calibrating intensity across the 18+ spectrum.
Every deck has its own intensity curve. Campfire Tales starts atmospheric and ends eerie. The Abyss starts uncomfortable and stays there. We tag cards by intensity level internally and weight the randomization so a session builds tension instead of starting at maximum.
Some cards we cut. Anything that crossed from horror into genuinely harmful territory got removed during testing. The line between "this is scary and fun" and "this is just unpleasant" is subjective, but we found that testing with real groups narrowed it quickly.
What the numbers say
10,000+ players across the platform. Engaged users average about 18 cards per session. The daily dare feature (a single curated card each day) brings back a small but consistent group.
The interesting signal is that horror-themed decks have higher completion rates than our other card games. People who start a Scary Challenges session tend to finish the deck. Whether that is the genre pulling them in or the social pressure of a sleepover group not wanting to quit first, we are still figuring out.
What we would do differently
We should have instrumented premium deck conversion earlier. Some decks are locked behind premium, and we built the content before building the measurement. That is a mistake we have since corrected in our newer products like Here We Ask, our free browser conversation card game for couples and friends.
Scary Challenges by Inithouse sits in a category (free 18+ horror card game) that barely exists as a digital product. Most horror party games are physical card decks. We think the browser-based version has advantages: no cards to lose, instant access via link, and a library that keeps growing. The 23+ decks today will be more next month.
