New router day promises faster WiFi, and the box promises 'easy setup'. Both can be true if you sidestep the five mistakes everyone makes on first boot.

Pitfalls worth skipping
- Default admin logins (admin/admin, printed in manuals everywhere) are the favorite first target of home network attacks: change it in session one.
- Expecting full plan speeds over WiFi in the far corner: WiFi is proximity physics, wire a desktop or add mesh when corners matter.
How to do it
- Physically connect in the right order. Power off the modem, ethernet from modem into the router's WAN/Internet port (the lonely one, different color), power modem on, wait two minutes for sync lights, then power the router. Order matters: modems bond with whatever boots behind them.
- Join its temporary network, run the wizard. The router broadcasts a setup network or the app finds the fresh unit: name your WiFi (pro move: reuse your OLD network name and password so every device in the house keeps working untouched), set a strong admin password, and choose automatic channel and band steering defaults, modern routers handle these better than humans.
- UPDATE THE FIRMWARE before anything else. The app or admin page shows firmware: routers ship with months old software containing patched-out security holes. Update first, wait through the reboot, and only then consider the router 'real'.
- Handle the ISP box properly. If your modem is also a router (common ISP combos broadcasting WiFi): enable its bridge mode or disable its WiFi radios. Two routers in a row create 'double NAT' headaches for gaming, calls and smart home gear, one voice solution again.
- Placement beats horsepower. Central, elevated, in the open, antennas vertical, away from thick masonry and the microwave. Closet placement casts two rooms into shadow before you ever customize a setting.
- Test everything before declaring victory. Speed test near the router and in the worst room, connect a TV and a phone, run a video call. Problems now are easy (move, adjust); problems discovered across weeks feel like 'bad router' but were placement all along.

Before you ask
Should I use my ISP's router or buy my own?
Owned routers typically pay for themselves in a year or two of rental fees and deliver better coverage and control. ISP combos work fine for tiny spaces and zero-hassle preferences.
Do I need WiFi 6 or 7?
WiFi 6 hits the sweet spot for most homes right now: cheap, fast, efficient with lots of devices. WiFi 7 dazzles on paper and pays off with newer devices and multi-gig internet.
