The engine air filter is a paper rectangle living in a plastic box under your hood, and swapping it is embarrassingly easy.

The steps, start to finish
- Find the airbox. A big black plastic box on top or to the side of the engine with a fat intake hose running to it. Owner's manual or a ten second look finds it on anything built this century.
- Open the clips. Metal clips or screws hold the lid, most pop open by hand. A few German cars want a screwdriver for four bolts: that's the whole toolbox for this job either way.

Note the old filter's orientation, pull it out. Look at which way the rubber edge faces and how dirty it really is: hold it up to light and if you can't see light through, you were overdue.
- Take a phone photo before removal, reassembly anxiety cured
- Leaves and bugs inside the box? Lift them out before the new one goes in
- Slide the new one in exactly the same way. Rubber seal down and seated all around, filter sitting flat in its tray. A filter half seated whistles and lets dust bypass into the engine, the one failure mode worth avoiding.
- Close the lid, snap the clips, done. Every clip audibly clicked, hose still on, nothing left loose. Congratulations, that just saved the shop fee and took less time than reading about it.

- Check the filter with every oil change: dusty rural roads halve the interval, city driving extends it long past 'recommendations'.
- Keep the receipt in the glovebox with the date and mileage written on it.
- While the hood is open, thirty seconds on the cabin air filter location too: that's the sneeze factory one, equally easy on most cars.
