How to copy trade on Polymarket: a practical guide
What copy trading on Polymarket actually involves: picking a trader, sizing your copies, the delay between their fill and yours, and how to test it without money.
Copy trading means your account repeats someone else’s trades. On Polymarket that is technically simple — every trade is public and on-chain — and practically harder than it looks, because you always arrive after the person you follow. This guide covers what the process involves, which decisions matter, and how to check the idea before any money is at stake.
What you are actually copying
Polymarket is a prediction market. Each market asks a question with a defined resolution — an election result, a sports outcome, an economic release — and trades in shares that pay $1 if the outcome happens and $0 if it does not. A share priced at $0.62 is the market saying “62% likely”.
When a trader you follow buys YES at $0.62, copying means your account buys the same outcome in the same market. It does not mean you get their price. You get the price available when your order reaches the book, which is normally later and usually worse.
The delay is the whole problem
A trade becomes visible to everyone else only after it has settled on-chain and reached the public feed. By then the order book has already absorbed it. The bigger and better-informed the original trade, the more the price has moved before anyone can follow.
This is why a trader’s published profit is a poor guide to whether copying them works. Someone can be up a large amount in absolute terms while every copy of their trades loses money, simply because their edge lives in the seconds you cannot reach.
The practical consequence: judge a trader by what a copier would have earned, not by what the trader earned.
Choosing who to follow
Absolute profit is the least useful number on any leaderboard. More telling:
- Consistency — the share of days in profit, not one enormous win that carries the whole record.
- Drawdown — how deep the worst decline was. A trader who doubled after halving is a different proposition from one who never fell far.
- Market speed — a trader working slow, weeks-long markets is far more copyable than one scalping minutes before a resolution.
- Minimum capital — a trader who takes large positions in thin markets cannot be copied meaningfully with a small balance.
Sizing: your limits, not theirs
A copy is not a proportional clone. Your position size comes from your own settings: a ceiling per trade, a ceiling per trader, a ceiling per market, and a ceiling on everything open at once. These nest inside each other, and the tightest one wins.
The per-market ceiling matters more than people expect. Without it, a trader who trades one hot market repeatedly will absorb your whole budget in a single question — and prediction markets resolve to zero or one, with nothing in between.
Test before you fund
A forward test in paper mode runs the same pipeline against live prices with virtual money: the same trader, the same delay, the same limits, no funds at risk. After a few weeks it answers the only question that matters — would copying this person have made money after the delay, at your position sizes?
This is different from backtesting. A backtest replays history and quietly assumes you could have filled at the historical price. A forward test cannot cheat, because the future has not happened yet.
Watch what does not get copied
Any honest copier skips trades: the price moved too far, the size would breach a limit, the risk gate blocked it. Those skips change your results as much as the trades that go through.
If a tool does not tell you what it skipped and why, you cannot tell a conservative system from a broken one. Both look identical from the outside — quiet.
Common questions
Do I need to give anyone my private keys to copy trade?
No, and you should not. Copying can be done through your own Polymarket account, where trades execute on your side and funds stay in your wallet. Paper mode needs no wallet at all.
How much money do I need to start?
Paper mode needs nothing — it runs on virtual money. For live trading the practical minimum depends on the trader: someone taking large positions in thin markets cannot be followed meaningfully with a small balance, because your order alone moves the price.
Will I get the same result as the trader I copy?
No. You enter after them and at your own price, your position size is set by your limits rather than their stake, and some of their trades will be skipped by your rules. On slow markets the gap is small; on fast ones it can flip the outcome.
Is copy trading on prediction markets legal where I live?
Prediction-market access is restricted in several jurisdictions, and the restriction applies to trading itself, not to copying specifically. Check the rules that apply to you before funding anything.
Written from the mechanics of the PolyCopy copy engine: per-trade, per-trader, per-market and global exposure limits, a paper forward-test running on live prices, and a journal recording every skipped trade with its reason.
