Fixing MySQL "Too Many Connections" Error on a High-Traffic PHP Website
Recently, I was working on DPBoss, a PHP and MySQL-based web application that receives a large number of concurrent requests.
After a traffic spike, the application started returning the following error:
SQLSTATE[HY000] [1040] Too many connections
The issue affected several pages because new database connections could not be established.
Environment
- PHP 8.x
- MySQL
- Nginx
- Cloudflare
- Linux Server
What I Found
After checking the server logs, I noticed that every request was opening a new database connection. Some scripts also failed to close connections properly, resulting in many idle connections remaining active.
Solution
I made several improvements:
- Reused database connections where possible.
- Optimized slow SQL queries.
- Added proper indexes to frequently queried tables.
- Increased the MySQL
max_connectionsvalue after monitoring server resources. - Reduced unnecessary AJAX requests.
- Enabled PHP OPcache.
- Optimized PHP-FPM worker settings.
- Implemented basic caching for frequently accessed data.
These changes significantly reduced the number of active database connections and improved overall response time.
Result
After optimization:
- No more "Too many connections" errors.
- Faster page loading.
- Lower MySQL resource usage.
- Better stability during high traffic.
