I Built a Free Browser-Based HTML Formatter — Here's Why and How

If you've ever copied HTML from a CMS, received markup from a client, or exported code from a page builder, you know the pain. Everything arrives as one unreadable wall of text, deeply inconsistent indentation, or a completely minified single line that looks like this:

Trying to edit that without formatting it first is a recipe for mistakes.

The Problem with Existing Tools

I looked around at the existing HTML formatters before building mine. Most of them had at least one of these problems:

Required a login just to format a file
Sent your code to a server — not ideal for client work or proprietary templates
Cluttered UI with ads everywhere and confusing options
Broke on larger files or unusual markup

I wanted something that just works. Fast, private, free, no account.

What I Built

HTML Formatter — a browser-based tool that formats, beautifies, and validates HTML entirely on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.

Here's what it does:

Formats and beautifies messy or minified HTML with consistent 2-space indentation
Validates structure before formatting — catches unclosed tags, broken nesting, malformed attributes
File upload support — drag in a .html or .htm file directly
Multiple output options — copy to clipboard, download the file, or open it live in a new tab
Works on mobile — no install, no login, completely free

The workflow I recommend is: validate first → fix any errors → format → review output. Running the formatter on broken HTML just gives you neatly indented broken HTML, so validation matters.

How It Works Under the Hood

Everything runs in the browser using JavaScript. When you paste HTML or upload a file:

The parser reads the raw markup and builds a token stream
The validator checks the token structure for common issues — unclosed tags, invalid nesting, missing document structure
The formatter walks the token tree and outputs each element with the correct indentation level
The result appears in the output panel in real time

Because there's no server round trip, it's fast even on large files. And because nothing leaves the browser, it's safe for sensitive or private markup.
