The job title sounds like military jargon for a reason. Palantir coined "Forward Deployed Software Engineer" in the mid-2000s, borrowing the concept of putting specialists directly in the field rather than behind the wire. The idea was straightforward: complex software deployed in complex environments needs engineers who live in those environments, not engineers who ship code and hand off a runbook.
That model stayed mostly inside Palantir for a decade. Then AI changed the economics of enterprise software, and every company selling an LLM-powered product suddenly needed people who could do what Palantir's engineers had been doing all along. Job postings for forward deployed engineers grew over 1,100% year-over-year between January and October 2025, according to an analysis of roughly 1,000 FDE job postings by Bloomberry. The role isn't new — the demand for it is.
What an FDE Actually Does Day to Day
The cleanest way to understand the role is to trace what happens after a large enterprise signs a contract for an AI product. The sales team closes the deal. The account manager handles the relationship. Who makes the software actually work inside an organization with a legacy ERP system from 2009, SAML authentication that predates OAuth, data residency requirements from their legal team, and three different internal stakeholders who each have a different definition of "success"?
That's the FDE's problem.
On a typical week, an FDE might spend the morning in a customer standup mapping which business process they're trying to automate, the afternoon writing Python that connects the vendor's model to the customer's PostgreSQL schema, and the evening debugging why a RAG pipeline is returning stale documents because the customer's SharePoint permissions changed. Then they write up what they learned and bring it back to the product team, because what breaks at a Fortune 500 company this week is usually what breaks at the next one.
The Bloomberry job-posting analysis found that the three most common FDE responsibilities — across 60% or more of postings — were working directly with customers, building and deploying AI or ML systems, and integrating systems and APIs. Notice the order: customer work comes first. That's not an accident.
Most FDEs spend between 25% and 50% of their time on-site with customers, based on reporting from The Pragmatic Engineer's coverage of how Palantir and OpenAI structure these teams. Travel is real. Working in physically restricted environments — airgapped government systems, factory floors, hospital networks — comes with the territory in the defense and healthcare verticals, which together account for about 35% of FDE job postings.
How FDE Differs from SWE and Solutions Engineer
Three roles get confused here, and the differences matter when you're targeting a job description.
A software engineer at an AI company builds the product that FDEs deploy. They optimize for scalability, clean abstractions, and a codebase that serves thousands of customers. Their work is measured by shipping features and keeping the platform stable. They rarely talk to customers. When they do, it's through a product manager who has already translated business needs into requirements.
A solutions engineer (or sales engineer) typically operates earlier in the sales cycle. They run demos, answer technical due diligence questions, and sometimes build proofs of concept on anonymized or sandbox data. Their job is to prove that the product can do what the customer needs — then hand off to whoever actually deploys it. Solutions engineers are measured by whether deals close, which is why roughly 8% of FDE job postings mention quotas compared to the nearly 100% of sales engineer postings that do.
A forward deployed engineer takes over after that handoff. They write production code on the customer's infrastructure, stay engaged for months rather than days, and own the outcome — not just the demo. The Bloomberry analysis found that 70% of FDE positions include equity compensation and zero percent mention quotas. That alone tells you these companies think of FDEs as engineers, not salespeople.
The distinction from solutions engineers is sharper than it looks on paper. A solutions architect might prototype a workflow with dummy data to prove feasibility. An FDE has to make that workflow run reliably with the customer's real data, inside their security boundary, meeting their SLAs. That gap — between "it works in a sandbox" and "it works in production" — is exactly where FDEs earn their keep.
If you are reading FDE job descriptions and they mention "OTE" or "commission" anywhere in the compensation structure, that posting is likely a solutions or sales engineering role that has borrowed the FDE label. Genuine FDE roles are compensated entirely on base and equity — the measure of success is a working deployment, not a closed deal.
The Skill Mix the Role Actually Requires
An analysis of 1,000 FDE job postings found Python in 66% of them, TypeScript in 35%, and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) in 32-22% respectively. AI-specific requirements — agents (35%), LLM experience (31%), and RAG (12%) — appear frequently but not universally. The technical floor is solid full-stack engineering with enough ML literacy to evaluate model behavior in production.
But the job postings consistently list something that purely technical roles don't: communication ability, not as a soft preference but as a hard requirement. The reason is structural. An FDE is usually the only person in a customer engagement who can both understand what the customer's VP of Operations is describing and write the integration that makes it real. If you can't bridge that gap, the deployment stalls.
Here's how to think about the skill mix in practice:
Engineering depth you need going in. Mid-level is the most common experience band (60% of postings require 3-5 years). You need to be able to independently design a system architecture, debug something unfamiliar quickly, and ship code without hand-holding. If you need a senior engineer to review your production database queries, you are not ready for a customer environment where you are the senior engineer.
ML literacy, not ML research. You do not need to have trained models. You do need to understand how LLMs fail — hallucination, context window limits, retrieval quality — well enough to diagnose problems in production and explain them to a non-technical stakeholder. Knowing when to use RAG versus fine-tuning versus a simpler rule-based filter is the kind of applied judgment FDEs need.
Systems integration experience. The majority of enterprise AI deployments fail at the integration layer: OIDC/SAML auth, legacy REST APIs without documentation, ETL pipelines that weren't built with model inference in mind. Experience connecting systems — even in a non-AI context — transfers directly.
Written communication. FDEs produce a lot of async output: customer-facing status updates, internal writeups on what broke and why, architecture proposals that non-engineers will read. If your writing is unclear, the customer-facing part of the job is harder than it needs to be.
The career path data supports starting from engineering rather than from a customer-facing role. In the Bloomberry analysis, 45% of FDEs came from software engineering backgrounds, 22% from solutions engineering, and 15% from data engineering or data science. It is consistently easier to develop customer-facing skills as an engineer than to develop production engineering skills as a solutions engineer.
A Concrete Path Into the Role
If you are a software engineer with 3-5 years of experience and you want to target FDE roles, here is what the move looks like in practice.
Step 1: Get integration and AI reps. The most direct preparation is building something that wires an LLM into a real external system — not a toy demo, but something that handles authentication, error states, and data that does not always arrive in the shape you expect. Open-source contributions to AI tooling, side projects that deploy a model against a real API, or internal tooling at your current job all count. The goal is being able to describe a production AI deployment you owned end to end.
Step 2: Find customer-adjacent work at your current company. Ask to join customer calls. Volunteer to triage support escalations that require engineering investigation. If your company has a solutions or implementation team, offer to shadow them. This is how you develop the instinct for translating business language into technical requirements — which is a skill, not a personality trait, and it can be practiced.
Step 3: Target the right companies. Palantir pioneered the model and still hires at all experience levels, including new graduates in exceptional cases. OpenAI built a dedicated FDE team starting in 2025. Anthropic, Scale AI, Ramp, Commure, and Gecko Robotics all have active FDE programs. The Bloomberry data shows that 58% of FDE roles are at companies with 11-200 employees — growth-stage startups that need custom deployment work but do not have dedicated implementation headcount. These smaller companies are sometimes more willing to hire someone making the transition who does not have a prior FDE title.
Step 4: Position your experience correctly. When applying, the frame that works is "engineer who has shipped things under ambiguity in customer-facing contexts." Early-stage startup experience is a strong signal — if you were one of the first ten engineers at a startup, you have already done much of what an FDE does: worn multiple hats, talked directly to users, shipped code to save the company rather than to close a sprint. Describe it that way.
On compensation: The Bloomberry analysis found a median reported salary of $173,816, with equity in 70% of roles. Staff-level FDE compensation at top-tier AI companies is reported significantly higher, though figures in the $300K-500K+ total comp range come from specific companies and should not be assumed to generalize. Compensation varies considerably by company size, location, and whether you are negotiating with a pre-IPO startup or an established enterprise vendor.
One limitation worth naming: the FDE role is still evolving fast enough that job descriptions are inconsistent. Some postings labeled "Forward Deployed Engineer" are standard implementation engineering. Others are solutions architect roles. Reading the actual responsibilities section — specifically whether the job expects you to write production code in the customer environment and own the deployment outcome — is more reliable than the title.
