How to Architect a Cross-Border Payment Using Stablecoins

Stablecoins can move value globally in minutes with fewer overheads. But what does that actually look like in a fintech environment where compliance checks and regulatory requirements apply to every transaction?

Getting this right means designing a flow that handles currency conversion, compliance, liquidity, and the realities of local payout systems.

Step 1: Payment Initiation and Sender KYC/AML

Every cross-border transaction starts with a sender initiating a payment through your platform. Before any funds move, a series of compliance checks must be completed.

This can range from basic KYC verification to confirm user identity to more advanced AML checks that monitor transaction patterns, amounts, and destinations.

These checks must be synchronous and completed before funds move. This matters because on-chain transactions are irreversible once executed. Running compliance checks after or in parallel introduces unnecessary risk. All validations should be completed upfront.

Step 2: Local Currency Conversion (On-Ramp)

The sender pays in their local currency using available payment methods in their region. This could be bank transfers or cards in Nigeria, mobile money or bank transfers in Ghana, or bank transfers and cards for UK or EU-based users.

Funds arrive in the platform’s local currency account off-chain. The platform then credits the sender’s balance in its internal ledger.

From an engineering perspective, this step relies entirely on existing local payment infrastructure. No stablecoin is involved yet. The separation between collection and settlement is an important architectural decision.

Step 3: FX Conversion to Stablecoin

At this stage, the platform converts the collected local currency into USDC or another supported stablecoin.

Step 5: FX Conversion from Stablecoin (Off-Ramp)

Once the stablecoin reaches the receiving wallet, it is converted into the recipient’s local currency using an off-ramp provider in the destination market.

This step typically takes between one and ten minutes. The key takeaway is that the full flow, from collection to settlement to conversion, is now measured in minutes instead of days.

Liquidity matters here. Your choice of off-ramp provider directly affects reliability. Routing large payments through a provider with limited liquidity can introduce delays or failed conversions.

Step 6: Local Payout Disbursement

The converted local currency is then sent to the recipient using their preferred payout method.

From the user’s perspective, nothing about this feels like crypto. They receive funds in their local currency without seeing wallet addresses or blockchain details. It simply feels like a fast payment.

Step 7: Reconciliation

The final step is reconciliation. Match the on-chain transaction hash with your internal payment record and update the status from pending_settlement to settled.

Capture a complete audit trail, including:

• Transaction hash
• Block number
• Timestamp
• Gas fees
• FX rates at both conversion points
• Local payout reference

You should also run periodic reconciliation jobs, hourly or daily, to detect any mismatches between on-chain data and your internal ledger.

Up to this point, the focus has been on architecture. How funds move, how wallets interact, and how stablecoins improve speed and cost.

But getting the flow right on paper is only part of the job.

Once you move into production, things become more complex. You are no longer just sending USDC from point A to point B. You are dealing with liquidity constraints, failed transactions, compliance requirements, reconciliation gaps, and user expectations around reliability.

This is where many otherwise solid implementations start to break down.

Running Stablecoin Payments in Production: Operational Realities

Every architecture looks clean on a whiteboard, but in production is where it gets tested. Here are the failure modes and edge cases you need to plan for upfront.

1. Off-Ramp Liquidity Constraints: Off-ramp providers hold local currency float. When that float runs low, payouts start to queue and recipients experience delays. This shows up more often in smaller corridors and during high-volume periods like month-end.

   Design your system with redundancy. Maintain at least one backup provider per major corridor so you can reroute payouts when a primary provider cannot meet demand.

2. FX Quote Expiry and Volatility: FX quotes are time-bound, typically valid for 30 to 90 seconds. If the user delays confirmation, the quote expires and needs to be refreshed.

   In volatile FX environments, this happens frequently. Your system should make this visible. Show a countdown for rate validity and prompt users to confirm quickly after receiving a quote.

   Actively monitor transaction status and don’t rely on passive waiting. Always define timeout thresholds and trigger alerts or retries when settlement exceeds your expected window.

5. Webhook and Ledger Mismatch: Most settlement confirmations arrive via webhooks. If your endpoint fails, processes duplicate events, or lacks idempotency, your internal ledger can drift from actual on-chain state.
