The selection isn't ranked in order of effort. It's ranked in order of leverage. Each one of these costs $0 or near-$0 to implement; each one compounds; each one is FTC + Google compliant by construction.
If you do nothing else, do these 10.
1. Ask in person, with a script
The single highest-converting review request is a person looking another person in the eye and asking. The conversion rate on a direct verbal ask runs 50–70%; the conversion rate on an unsolicited email runs 1–3%. Most operators avoid it because it feels awkward without a script. Use this one verbatim:
"Hey, before I head out — if everything came out right today, would you mind leaving us a quick review on Google? It really matters for a small business like ours. I'll text you the link in a couple minutes so you don't have to hunt for us. Sound good?"
Three beats: gratitude, name the platform, promise the link. Thirty seconds total.
2. Send the SMS exactly 30 minutes after service
Sooner feels presumptuous. Later loses the emotional peak. Thirty minutes is the consistent sweet spot — the work is done, the satisfaction is fresh, and any post-service questions have already surfaced (so you can handle them privately instead of seeing them in a public review).

3. Put a QR on every paper invoice
The bottom of every invoice gets a QR code with a one-line CTA: "Liked the work? Scan to leave a Google review." Invoices are read carefully (the customer is checking the math), so the QR gets actual eye time. Pair the QR with the short URL printed underneath as a fallback for older phones.
This single placement, done consistently, has lifted some of our customers' review rate by 40%+ over six months. Free to add. Takes 10 seconds in QuickBooks or your invoicing tool.
4. Counter card with "scan to thank us"
A small (4" × 6") tabletop card next to the register or check-out point. The CTA matters: "Scan to thank us" converts higher than "Leave a review" for impulse customers because thanking feels active, while reviewing feels like a chore. Once they scan, they land on your Google review page and the review framing kicks in.
Tested across 20+ retail customers; the "thank" framing wins consistently.
5. QR contrast above 4:1, size scaled to viewing distance
Most QRs in the wild fail silently. The customer holds up their phone, the camera fumbles, the customer gives up. Two rules cover 90% of QR failures:
- Foreground-to-background contrast must be at least 4:1. Black on white is the safe default.
- The QR side length should be at least 10% of the typical viewing distance. A counter sign scanned from 4 feet needs a QR at least 4.8 inches wide.
Test every print run by scanning from the actual placement distance with both an iPhone and an Android, in dim light. If it doesn't scan first try, the contrast or size is wrong.
6. POS-triggered review request (Toast / Square / Clover)
For restaurants, retail, and salons: configure your POS to fire a webhook on payment completion. The webhook schedules a review request 30–60 minutes later. The customer's phone is already in their hand at payment; the request lands while they're still in your venue or just after.

7. Stripe-paid invoice → 24-hour review request
For service businesses billed via Stripe: when the invoice is paid, schedule a review request 24 hours later. The 24-hour delay covers the case where the work was billed but not yet completed (common for businesses with deposits). The Stripe webhook gives you the cleanest single trigger across most of the SaaS-billed customer base.
8. Sticker on the appliance you serviced (residential service)
After every major appliance install (water heater, furnace, condenser, garage door opener), put a 1" × 1" branded sticker on the unit with a QR. Customers see the sticker every time they go into the basement / mechanical room. Insurance claims and warranty registrations both involve photographing the unit — your QR ends up in those photos. The sticker captures rebooks, referrals, and reviews 6–12 months after the install.
9. Reply to every review (yes, even the bad ones)
Profiles where the owner replies to ~80%+ of reviews receive 12–20% more new reviews per month than profiles with no replies. Replies signal that the business is active and listens.
- Good reviews → brief gratitude.
- Bad reviews → calm, public correction-of-record + private follow-up offer.
Never argue, never let a reply read as defensive. The reply is for the next customer reading the review, not the one who wrote it.
10. Know what Google forbids — and don't go near it
Google's Contributor Policy explicitly prohibits incentivized reviews regardless of the size of the gift. The October 2024 FTC rule (16 CFR § 465) makes undisclosed incentivization illegal, with penalties up to $51,744 per violation.
What that means in practice: don't offer customers a $5 gift card "for leaving a review." Don't run contests where the prize entry is conditional on reviewing. Don't pre-screen unhappy customers away from your public profile (that's review gating; it's now explicitly illegal).
