Under DOT regulations, when an airline cancels your flight or makes a "significant change," you are entitled to a full cash refund â no questions asked. This applies even if:

- The airline offers you a "free rebooking"
- Months have passed since the cancellation
The DOT's April 2024 ruling strengthened this significantly â airlines must now proactively issue refunds without passengers having to request them. Many still don't.
What Counts as a "Significant Change"?
You're entitled to a refund (not just rebooking) if:
- Flight is cancelled for any reason
- Departure or arrival time changes by 3+ hours (domestic) or 6+ hours (international)

- You're downgraded to a lower cabin class
- A connection airport changes
Step 1: Reject the Voucher
If the airline is offering a travel credit or voucher, you can decline it and request a cash refund instead. You don't have to explain yourself. Just say: "I'd like a cash refund, please."
